conversation with a 7 year old:
Her: so I was wondering... are you at college or are you a full grown adult?

The conversation that accompanied this #throwbackthursday. “This is my senior picture. What do you think?” “... ... ... Uh, your hair...” ”Yes?” “Interesting.” “It was a thing. That style was popular.” “It’s kind of, I don’t know... poofy.” “I suppose—“ “And was that a thing? Holding your face like that?” “In pictures. I think—” “Okay then. Can I go now?” #conversationswithkids #genx #1987 #theydontgetit #nevermind https://www.instagram.com/p/Bsweq84FU8Y/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1bh0mxk1bj3p2

Me, Talking to Kids.
Strangers give me a ton of anxiety as a whole, but strangers that are children take it to a completely different level so I just assumed I hated all kids. Then I lived in Raleigh and the people I spent the most time with all had young ones, so they were basically forced on me.
What happened, though, was that I fell in love with all of them and enjoyed hanging out with them more than some adults I spend time with. Since then, my friends keep getting knocked up and some are finding themselves in relationships where kids are involved, both of which mean I spend a lot of time with kids, watching videos of kids, hearing stories about kids, etc. You get the picture.
I have been kind of surprised to find that these kids all offer something that’s fascinating to me. These little people are funny. Some are so smart it’s embarrassing to try and keep up in conversation. Others are huge assholes, but they offer something too.
That being said, I was stalking the Internet and a friend of mine who is a dad had posted a video series and in the caption claimed it was funny. Knowing this friend, I thought, “Yeah right. YOU think it’s funny but no one else will” so I watched. And I was wrong. It was really funny. So funny that I watched like 6 more. While my friend was fine, the part that intrigued me was… his kid.
After watching these I asked my friend if I could talk to her on video to see what happened because I was pretty certain it would be funny. He liked the idea as long as I didn’t say “fuck” and we made plans for Addie and I to talk.
As I was preparing for this, I thought about other kids I know and then figured if the interview with Addie went well and made me laugh, there could be opportunity for like a monthly kid chat. I asked my parent friends and they agreed, so you’re welcome. Video conversations with kids who are cooler than me proving that they’re cooler than me.
Addie and I had our chat earlier this week. She gave me advice on how to be funny, explained what apps are cool (apparently only old people use Facebook) and called me out for using “bad words” in my writing, among other things.
Enjoy!
My six year old sister..
Amira: Did you know that brown eyes are the most common in the world?
Me: I've heard that, yes..
Amira: And if your from the same family, you have to have the same colour eyes
Me: So if a mum had green eyes and the dad had blue eyes, what colour eyes would the children have?
Amira: (concentrates for a few seconds)
Amira: Obviously green Shukri, because they come out from their mum..
She said it with such confidence it actually made me laugh. But I'd say that's a pretty thought through answer for a kid her age.
Have fun when you learn about genetic crosses and dominant/recessive genes sis! Lol
