For those of you starting college:

Your high school teachers probably made college out to be this whole formal experience. They probably told you you had to perfectly format emails with salutations and body paragraphs. They probably terrified you with thoughts of strict guidelines and rigid MLA formats. As you embark on your college journey, I’d like to share with you two experiences I had in college for you to consider:

I once turned in an assignment that was just a paragraph of *pterodactyl screeches* and told my professor it was to be read to the tune of Bohemian Rhapsody. I got full credit.

When your professor calls you “Dear Ones!”

wanted to share how cool my professor is, especially since it’s pride month.

As it’s an online 7-week writing course, all my “classes” are less-than-ten minute videos made by my professor. He includes his own illustrations in these and on the class portal. 

Our required reading was Fun Home by Alison Bechdel. For those of you who don’t know, Fun Home  is a comic-memoir about Bechdel’s relationship with her father growing up. Bechdel is a lesbian comic creator.

For one of my essays I got to write about lesbian narratives in literature. I decided to expand on this essay for my final project and my professor was like awesome I got some PDFs you can cite in your writing. He sends me two PDFs with comics by Bechdel, one of which is a full chapter (volume?) of D*kes to Watch Out For. Which I highly recommend.

TL;DR My professor likes comics, assigned queer lit for class, and sent me more queer lit when I told him I was writing about it.

Fanfiction will be the death of me. I am very okay with staying up all night or forgetting to eat because I am neck deep in an amazing fic that’s 50k and counting, in-character, and absolutely devastating to me.

So my professor gave us an oral quiz today that he is grading. It’s one of the most intriguing things I’ve ever experienced.

1) how many shirts can you place in an empty backpack? 2) how long is a piece of rope? 3) *flicks light switches in random order* what logic circuit has been demonstrated? 4.) how many four digit pins are possible if the only restriction is that the first number can’t be zero? 5.) How many possible states are there if you have two functions that can each do four different actions 6.) name two irrational numbers 7.) how many numbers are in between one and five 8.) how many whole numbers are between one and five 9.) what is it called when you’re looking for a thing but you can’t find the thing, because you found a thing so similar to the thing you were looking for that you think it’s the thing but it’s not the thing 10.) are genetic algorithms destined to converge

New favorite professor

My telecommunications professor this semester actually acknowledges that video games can be at least as much of an art form as movies; his sarcasm is near constant; and oh, I forgot to mention that in the late 80s he dropped out of college to MANAGE A PUNK BAND.
