Pokémon Evolution Stones: Part I

Basically, this is going to be a list of what I think some of the evolution stones will be from the Pokémon series, based on either, how it looks, how it is named, or both.

Moon stone: 

This first one is probably pretty straight forward and much like the anime and game says I would suspect that it would be meteor fragments from the moon. However, what makes this so neat is that we actually see meteorite fragments of the moon on earth, and here is what is looks like:

Water Stone:

This one wasn’t so obvious for me to decide what it was. At first I thought opal, but I wasn’t really satisfied with that until I remembered that quartz can actually have visible water bubbles trapped within its crystals and, to me, that seemed like the perfect fit. These water* bubbles are typically called “enhydros” and they are very popular to buy in rock and mineral stores because they are so cool to look at. 

*These bubbles don’t have to be made of water and for the purpose of showing you within an image and not a video I will actually show quartz with a petroleum enhydro so its more visible.

Dawn Stone:

For the dawn stone I went primarily on how it looked and less by its name. I assumed that it was named by the way that it refracts light to look like a beam of sun or perhaps a star. Either way the first thought that I had was of a star sapphire. This are highly beloved in the jewelry industry by the way it makes a star pattern in the stone. This effect is called an asterism, and is created by the growth of small rutile crystals inclusions within the sapphire. This phenomenon is not exclusive to sapphires and can happen to many other stones, I just chose sapphire because of the stones color.

Thinking of the dub.

Also, a few photos of the covers and posters for the dubbed versions of the movie. It had two dubs, one in Castillian Spanish (which was released in some theaters) that respected the Spanish translation of the book and translated the character names (Well, more or less, as far as I could research, the names of the characters changed with respect to the translation of the book. And as I can see they decided to adapt them by naming after plants that are better known in their region) this dub was titled "Orejas largas" (Long ears).

And the other is the Latin Spanish dub made in the 90s on Mexico, this was guided by its own course keeping the English names (by the way, many of them and Lapine's words are mispronounced lol) and was released straight to DvD with the title "Hazel, el principe de los conejos" (Hazel, the prince of rabbits).

You can find the Latin dub on youtube easily, but the Castillian Spanish no. At least until someone with the dvd in their hands can upload it (I really want to hear this one, if I'm honest).

By the way, in the Mexican dubbing the Bright Eyes song was deleted and only a generic melody is heard. I don't know the reason, but it was common at the time that the insert songs were eliminated (If I'm not wrong it was because they couldn't pay the rights or something similar). I don't know if the Castillian Spanish dubbing deleted it too, but it seems that no and I think (I think, I don't know) that it was also dubbed.

The croc than ran on hooves - The story of Boverisuchus

Do you fear crocodiles and their various relatives? Do you feel safe from crocodile related incidents on dry land? Do you live in Germany? If you answered yes to any of these questions, then its a good thing that you weren’t alive during the Eocene!

This is Boverisuchus (formerly Pristichampus), a crocodylian that lived during the Eocene epoch (specifically the Lutetian stage, between 47.2 and 41.2 mya). Open niches following the K-Pg Extinction event left an opening for large land predators, leaving crocodylians to fill that niche when their usual niche of aquatic predator became saturated with, well, other crocs! Boverisuchus was one such example. It could reach sizes of 3 metres (11 ft), which may seem small compared to say, a saltwater crocodile, but it becomes doubly terrifying when you realise it lived on land. Various adaptations made this possible including a loss of osteoderms (bony armour), longer legs (with the rear legs longer than the front), hoof-like toes, a less finlike tail and more ziphodont teeth (compact, serrated, straight-edged). Similarities in teeth between Boverisuchus and certain theropod dinosaurs originally lead to some scientists believing that a non-avian dinosaur had survived through to the Paleogene. 

These adaptations would’ve made it more than capable as a land predator, galloping and chasing after its prey - including terrestrial mammals like early horses. Some paleontologists theorise that because of its longer back legs, it may have been capable of running on two legs, because a massive land-croc isn’t scary enough. So why then did this fascinating piece of work go extinct? Climatological changes and global cooling (due to plate tectonics) negatively benefitted reptiles while benefitting mammalian predators, such as the creodonts and the ancestors of carnivorans. Our world now is safer perhaps without scary land-crocs but we may never experience the potential joy of riding a hoofed crocodylian-steed into battle.

Meet Hercules!

The largest big cat in the world.

Hercules is a liger, a hybrid between a male lion and a female tiger. He weighs roughly 43kg (922 lbs-ish) and about 3 meters (11ft) from head to tail. On all fours, Hercules is 2m (6ft) tall from his ears to the ground.

Being as big as he is, Hercules can jump up to 20m forward. An extraordinary feat for a bug cat. In comparison the average african lion can jump a meer 11m. Crazy, right?

Our big boy has a hearty diet of meats and eats 10-14kg (20-30lbs) per day. The african lion usually eats about 30kg, but needs only 5kg. Hercules is very playful and gets plenty of exercise, one form he enjoys (thanks to his tiger mom) is swimming.

But why is the boy so big?

Hercules was able to get to the size hes at because of his parents. The growth-inhibitor genes present in female lions aren't in the female tigers, this means the growth-promoting genes in the male lion is free to run wild and help our boy Hercules grow big and strong.

Tigons, the hybrid of a male tiger and a female lion, are quite small in comparison to their cousins(?). The female lion prevents the tigon from getting to big with her growth-inhibiting genes. (I don't know about the tiger genes, if they have them or not)

Hercules, as far as I can tell, is still kickin' and has lived for more than 10 years. Ligers are thought to live around 13-18 years. He currently resides at Myrtle Beach Safari Wildlife Preserve in South Carolina and is the world to one Dr. Bhagvan Antle.

(And yes, Dr. Bahgvan Antle is unfortunately the same "Doc" Antle from the Netiflix series 'Tiger King')
