Corocotta, entre el mito del otro Viriato

Aunque se desconoce su veracidad y su historia se queda a menudo en Leyenda, Corocotta es uno de esos personajes de película, como Viriato, Axterix, Vercingetorix, Merlín, Arturo o William Wallace, por mencionar unos ejemplos. Su leyenda se entremezcla con elementos míticos, más que hechos históricos, tal y como apuntan la mayoría de los autores.

Mientras que unos afirman que Corocotta era un ladrón o bandolero, otros lo sitúan en las guerras cántabras y otros, la mayoría, afirman que fue un personaje ficticio casi mítico o legendario.

Sin embargo, ciñéndonos al guion oficial, contaremos la historia de este “líder cántabro” que se enfrentó –de manera similar a Viriato- a los romanos. La historia de Corocotta se engloba en el marco de las Guerras Cántabras, en el siglo I a.C., entre el 29 y el 19 a.C. Estas guerras fueron una serie de campañas militares emprendidas por el emperador Augusto para someter a los pueblos del norte de Hispania, que eran de los últimos que aún resistían la dominación romana.

In Indian and Ethiopian folklore, the crocotta is a wild beast, described as a cross between a dog and a wolf. Also known as the leucrocotta, it is said to be able to asexually reproduce, and spontaneously change gender in its youth.

The crocotta is thought to be incredibly strong, fast and dangerous. It can imitate human voices to attract prey, and can be killed by no weapon known to man.
