This is a "Coronal" aurora borealis viewed over Iceland a few years ago. In a Coronal aurora, rarely seen in the arctic, the auroral pillars seem to dance all around a single spot, so if you're perfectly positioned it seems to fully surround you. Spotting these auroras are lifetime goals for some night sky viewers.

Toward the middle of 2012, a long standing solar filament suddenly erupted into space producing an energetic Coronal Mass Ejection (CME). The filament had been held up for days by the Sun's ever changing magnetic field and the timing of the eruption was unexpected. It created a great aurora!
