SUPER POWEREDS BY DREW HAYES
You want super heroes? You want found family? You want LGBT+ rep without it being the defining feature of the characters? Nerd references galore? How about college aged characters acting like college aged people? Realistic consequences for the characters’ actions? Sibling love?
A structured, believable, and diverse super hero universe? Do you want an ensemble of dynamic growing characters? Characters that learn, grow-up, and turn over prejudices they previously held? A plot that will have you screaming in your car as you listen to the (astounding) audiobooks during your commute? Writing that will have you pausing to appreciate its beauty?
Super Powereds has it all.
The powers are unique and surprising, and the system work much more like an ordered magic system than the unmitigated chaos that usually surrounds super powers.
“Knowledge is power. That would be the motto of Lander University, had it not been snatched up and used to death by others long before the school was founded. For while Lander offers a full range of courses to nearly all students, it also offers a small number of specialty classes to a very select few. Lander is home to the Hero Certification Program, a curriculum designed to develop student with superhuman capabilities, commonly known as Supers, into official Heroes.
Five of this year’s freshmen are extra special. They have a secret aside from their abilities, one that they must guard from even their classmates. Because for every one person in the world with abilities they can control, there are three who lack such skill. These lesser super beings, Powereds as they are called, have always been treated as burdens and second class citizens. Though there has been ample research in the area, no one has ever succeeded in turning a Powered into a regular human, let alone a Super.
Don’t forget to read Corpies, the spin-off set between Super Powereds: Year 3, and Super Powereds: Year 4.
Kyle McCarley narrates the audiobooks. He provides some of the best voice acting I’ve heard in audiobook narrations to date. It’s pretty magical listening to the audiobooks.
THEY’RE CHEAP TOO! The first two books are $3.99 on kindle, and the second two are $5.99.
The first book is 227,795 words long.
The second book is 180,000 words.
The third book is 356,700 words.
And the fourth book is a whopping 527,365 words long.
Super Powereds was originally written as a web series. Meaning, it reads extremely similar to how a fanfiction reads. The platform allowed for deeper character development and more time to explore the universe. You get to see the angst, and the adorable everyday interactions that make or break a story.
I CANNOT STRESS ENOUGH HOW COOL THIS SERIES IS. As the characters and plot develop, hand in hand, it gets even better. Each book is better than the last, and leaves you wanting more.
And don’t even get me started on the spin-off, Corpies. It’s packed full of dad friend moments, dream following, adventure, extremely adorable romance, etc.
