Corpuscularia lehmannii. September 2020.
Corpuscularia lehmannii
Corpuscularia is a small genus in the Ice Plant Family (Aizoaceae), native to South Africa. Like many other plants in the family, it has seed pods which close up like a fist when conditions are dry, but absorb water when it rains, causing them to open so that the seeds can splash out. In this photo we see the seeds doing just this as a result of our recent rains. Corpuscularia lehmannii comes from the Eastern Cape Province, west of the city of Port Elizabeth.
