Villain clutched their undoubtedly broken ribs and stared up at Superhero from their position on the ground. Their glare would be more effective were it not so pained.
Superhero stared back idly, as if dealing with a minor annoyance. "Any last words before I rid this world of your pathetic existence?"
"I thought heroes didn't kill people."
"Yes, well. Not officially." Superhero delivered a hard kick to Villain's jaw, knocking them down. "But accidents happen."
Villain spit out the fresh blood in their mouth and tried to stop their head from spinning. "Does the agency know their trophy hero is a murderer?"
Superhero smiled. "Oh, darling. Who do you think handles the coverup?"
So what, were all heroes like this then? Were they morals just an act? Hero wouldn't do this. Their Hero wouldn't. But their Hero wasn't here to save them.
As if reading their mind, Superhero spoke again. "Shame Hero isn't here to see this. I'm sure they'd love to come and give their little speach about being better than our enemies, but they got a little...caught up at the headquarters."
"Why do I get the feeling you had something to do with that?"
Superhero flashed their public smile. The one they gave to the press and city officials. Villain knew their real smile was much darker. "I'm sure I don't know what you mean."
@alilbatwrites your song was "The Law" by Reach, here is a snippet based on that!!
When Hero got back to the league from saving the city, they had expected celebration, or at least a thank-you. What they got instead was… eye-opening to say the least. They opened the doors to a bunch of stone-faced, enhanced superiors.
“Uh…what?” Hero asked, confused, “did I cause collateral damage again? I thought I was careful this time!”
“It isn’t that, Hero,” Superhero started.
“You took Supervillain down in under two minutes,” another super stated.
“You say that like it’s a bad thing,” Hero joked.
When they received no response, Hero faltered.
“It…it’s not a bad thing, right?”
“Hero, you know our League is here to keep the nation’s peace,” Superhero said, “and to eliminate security risks.”
“Well, yeah, I’d day I did pretty good out there,” Hero said, “so why do you all seem upset?”
The sound of footsteps behind them made Hero’s head turn. Two league agents put a hand on each of Hero’s shoulders.
“Superhero,” Hero asked nervously, turning back to face their superior, “what’s going on?”
“We took a risk letting you roam free with your powers of energy manipulation,” Superhero said, “your abilities have grown to an incredible strength, and now the risks outweigh the benefits. I’m sorry, Hero.”
As Superhero spoke, one of the agents jammed the end of a needle into Hero’s neck. Hero cried out in pain, feeling ice flood their veins.
“So that’s it- you’re just going to get rid of me because I’m too good at my job!?” Hero asked desperately, feeling their limbs turn to lead.
“Your powers will only increase exponentially from here,” another league member said, “if we don’t contain you now, we’ll never be able to stop you if you become a threat.”
Hero tried to wrench themselves from the agents’ grips, but they held them fast. Hero’s knees buckled just as a wheelchair with padded restraints came into view.
“Take them down to Containment Level 3,” Superhero ordered.
“N-no,” Hero slurred.
Hero felt themselves be lifted into the wheelchair. Straps tightened across their body just as their vision began to fade. Their head sank down into their chest as the drug sucked them under.
…
When Hero awoke next, they thought maybe the events from earlier were just a bad dream. Maybe Supervillain had defeated them, and they would wake up in the med bay with Superhero by their bedside. Hero opened their eyes to a stark white room. They looked down at their form and found that they had been stuffed in some kind of straight-jacket suit, the buckles going all the way down to their ankles. Hero jerked upright, trying and failing to free themselves. They tried to call on their power, but their movements were sluggish, and their energy barely materialized.
Hero fought back the tears that brimmed in their eyes. They had figured if they ever did get captured, it would be by some criminal, never by their own team, the people they fought beside every day. Now their team- their family- had them drugged up and restrained in a cell just like those criminals they had been taught to fight. When they couldn’t fight them any longer, Hero let the tears fall with a choked sob.
“Hey,” a voice echoed.
Hero looked up, sniffling. The door opened, revealing a league agent.
“What do you want?” Hero asked bitterly.
“Seriously?” the league member demanded indignantly, “I come all this way to save you and-oh. Right. The outfit.”
The league member unbuttoned their uniform to reveal a familiar, dark suit underneath.
“Villain?” Hero asked in disbelief.
“Duh,” Villain said, “saw what you did out there with Supervillain. That was pret-ty impressive. But I knew your precious league wouldn’t like it. So here I am.”
Hero remembered the stories Superhero had told them about Villain, how they had abandoned the league years ago. They remembered the late-night, rooftop conversations with Villain, about how the league wasn’t what they seemed.
“Are you going to say, ‘I told you so’?” Hero asked dejectedly.
“Nah, you’ve been punished enough,” Villain said, “come on, let’s get you out of here.”
Villain worked to free Hero from their restraints. They pulled out a syringe filled with liquid.
“This is gonna counteract the junk they’ve pumped in your system,” Villain said, “the car’s outside waiting. We can be out of the city limits in an hour… unless you’d like to torch this place first?”
Hero shook their head, holding their arm out for Villain to administer the antidote.
“I just wanna go,” Hero said.
“I gotcha,” Villain said, helping them up, “leave the torching to me then.”
…
Villain drove off, Hero in the passenger seat, the league base ablaze behind them.
Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays! Once again this year I chose to participate in Secret Santa snippet exchange! This year I coincidentally got my girlfriend @justalittletoocorrupted! I really hope you like it <333
Prompt: Villain x Hero (who is a sidekick to superhero!) and Superhero finds out Hero was dating Villain (or just fell in love with them) and kidnaps them to try and help them understand that's a bad thing and the Villain could save them!
(I ended up doing more villain x civilian (I checked if it would be okay))
Note! As we are really close I decided to use ocs, this is an au where Dystopia from Dystopian Reflections is a civilian, via the name Cain. Vortex/Blank-Slate is @justalittletoocorrupted’s oc and it uses it/its and he/him pronouns
Tw: kidnapping, arguing, mentions of violence, swearing
“Cain Harlow.”
Cain’s head was foggy. He blinked a couple times, his eyebrows furrowing in confusion. He glanced down at his hands, silvery looking threads were slowly unwrapping from his wrists and making their way back to their creator. His eyes followed and they made their way back to a woman, a superhero more specifically.
Looking around, the room almost appeared to be an interrogation room. He was not cuffed, but he sat in a closed room at a table across from the hero.
Nothing was making sense, he last remembered being at the grocery store! He was just shopping! His boyfriend and him were going to have a nice dinner that night and he went to get a few things they would need.. he has no memory of leaving there and ending up with this superhero in front of him!
“…Who are you?”
“The media refers to me as the Porcelain Woman,” the superhero replied simply.
That makes sense he supposed until suddenly the name clicked in his head and Cain realized exactly who she was. And the alias quickly seemed obvious too. Looking at her, she didn’t look like a normal person, well, because she wasn’t. Her body appeared very doll-like with long, curly black hair and perfect makeup. All exemplified by the apparent cracks across her face, just like what can happen to porcelain.
However, even though she looked like a doll, she wasn’t one. He’s heard his fair share of news stories criticizing her for being a hero. And that is the result of many considering her less than human. She is a powerful spirit inhabiting the life size doll. But the spirit, or a “Reflector,” is a reflection of a real life person, given their name. They are typically chaotic entities. …Not heroes. But he shouldn’t make assumptions about their character..
…But it explains how he got there. From what he’s heard, she has some form of mind control ability in the form of a literal puppet on strings. The doll shell she uses is apparently quite fitting. His face morphed into disgust at the thought of how he got there.
Cain took a deep breath. “Why am I here?”
She stared at him for a few seconds before answering. Her fake, glassy, and yellow eyes were a bit unnerving. “You should know why you are here, do you not?”
Ah.
He could only be there for one reason, and if a superhero of all people is involved, he definitely knew. But he also wasn’t foolish enough to give himself away without her stating why he’s there first. “I’m afraid I do not understand why I am here. Considering I was taken out of a grocery store, pardon my confusion on the matter.”
The Porcelain Woman drummed her fingers on the table. “It was necessary at the time, it was for your safety,” she stated, brushing off his comment. “You’re here, Mr. Harlow, because of your boyfriend. Are you aware that your partner goes by the alias of Blank-Slate?”
There it is.
“I do not see why that matters,” Cain answered, trying his hardest to keep his face schooled into a neutral expression.
She stared again, almost as if in surprise. “Your boyfriend has hurt and killed many people, have you no remorse for them, their families, or future victims? It is not a good thing for you to be dating it. Does it not hurt knowing its career and choices?”
He let out a sigh. He knows what Vortex does is wrong, horrible even, but it has never made him feel unsafe.. rather it has made him feel so loved and cared for. Maybe it’s selfish that that is all he cared to think about in this situation but he didn’t care. And it likely makes him a horrible person too, but if it ever asked him to join it in what it does, he’s sure he’d say yes in a heartbeat..
“Blank-Slate treats me with much more love and care than anyone else ever has. What it does may not be considered right, but it has never subjected me to its lifestyle, rather it does its best to protect me from it,” Cain replied calmly, crossing his arms over his chest.
The Porcelain Woman scoffed at his comment. “Do you really believe it loves you? It is a villain, Mr. Harlow, one that seeks to draw any sort of horrible reaction it can get out of someone. That means it will eventually revel in the heartbreak it will inevitably cause you.”
Cain shook his head. “You do not understand the nature of our relationship. You believe that to be true when in reality I am an exception to that idea.”
“No, you are failing to understand. I want to help you, this agency wants to help you. Being in that relationship is only going to bring you a lot of pain. We want to help you and stop that from happening. Loving Blank-Slate will hurt you. It is not someone you should love.” Her tone held a bit of concern, but for him it was difficult to distinguish if it was genuine or fake.
Despite that, this situation was ridiculous, he wanted to go home! He spun a ring on his finger that Vortex gave him to try and calm himself and his anxieties. He hoped to get out of there soon, or maybe Vortex already realized he hadn't come home when he said he would…
Cain supposed he could understand some of her points, he knew it enjoys getting a reaction out of people, but that’s not how it is in regards to him. The amount of times it has seen him vulnerable and treated him with so much love and compassion and respect.. The amount of times he’s seen it so vulnerable.. if it wanted to hurt him, it would have done so many months ago. He’s never loved anyone quite like Vortex and this superhero will not sway him from that.
“I get what you are trying to convey, but I do not want help from you or your agency. Rather, I wish you would have let me just go about my day,” he said more firmly. He was tired of being there now. He hasn’t been there very long, but being in that room quickly aggravated him. Everything just was wrong about this.
“Mr. Harlow,” the superhero interjected, “your safety is at risk here! I am merely trying to offer you a way out of your situation but you are only showing me disrespect for my efforts!”
Cain gritted his teeth before raising his voice. Not only was this aggravating, but he was also talking to a wall. How lovely. “That is because you fail to show me respect! I do not want your efforts!! Let me spell it out, I. Do. Not. Want. Your. Help.” He sucked in a breath before trying to continue, his voice returning to a normal volume. “I’ll get ‘hurt’ in your words for all I damn care. It is not your responsibility to look after me.”
“I understand that it’s not my responsibility, but I don’t want you to be added to its list of victims! Blank-Slate-“
“Blank-Slate,” Cain snapped, “Is the love of my life whether you like it or not. Quite frankly, it has treated me far better than you have, and I have only known you for less than a day.”
“You don’t make it easy to get into contact with you,” The Porcelain Woman sneered. “Your career as a doctor makes you busy and most other times you are spotted with the villain. Bringing you here today in the way I had may have been unethical, but I had no choice. You were free and it was the only opportunity I had to get you here. If you would hear me out, you would understand it was for the better!”
“Oh so you and your band of heroes have been keeping tabs on me? You can’t, you know, send me an email or message that your heroes need to talk to me? You resorted to kidnapping me?” Cain threw his hands up in exasperation. “I’m going to repeat myself one more time, leave me alone. I am happy with my boyfriend. I do not care about your concerns about my supposed safety.”
“That was only a result of trying to keep tabs on Blank-Slate, which is actually incredibly difficult to do. We only very recently discovered you are its partner,” she retorted.
Cain has had enough of all of this. There seemed to be no convincing this woman that he feels safe and loved in his relationship. And really it should be none of her business at all! She’s entirely convinced that Vortex will just suddenly start hurting him one day just because it can. They’ve been dating for quite awhile and it hasn’t done so.
And what’s more, he’s been able to see a side of Vortex that it doesn’t show anyone else. To others it very easily can seem cruel! But to him it has only ever been caring and affectionate and so so loving. But even when he has accidentally caught it doing its villain work, he can’t help but be a bit fascinated by it. And strangely enough, after seeing what it does and seeing it hasn’t done anything to him, it only has made him feel more safe and secure in their relationship.
Cain stood up from his chair. “I appreciate you trying to ‘warn me’ about my boyfriend, but I really do not need your assistance and I would like to get going home.”
“Please sit, we are not done talking, Mr. Harlow. Going back to your boyfriend would be a bad idea,” the hero advised, her glassy eyes watching him stand.
“No, ma’am, I am heading home. Excuse me,” he said while trying to move past her to the door.
“We aren’t done,” she stated, more harshly this time. Silvery threads shot from her hands towards his legs. He yelled a curse before quickly stumbling backwards, narrowly avoiding them.
“Are you fucking delusional??” Cain cried out. “I acknowledge why you may be upset with my decision but that is unacceptable! For a hero especially! Contrary to what you think, my love for Blank-Slate will not lead to something completely horrific!”
“I’m not allowed to let you walk out so easily. I apologize that you don’t get it, but Blank-Slate is incredibly dangerous. I need you to stay awhile longer, I wasn’t even close to finishing on this matter.”
Throughout this whole argument, the woman’s face has been just about completely neutral the entire time minus her tone, and it honestly was becoming infuriating. In the right state of mind he would realize that her being so doll-like didn’t allow for a great range of physical emotion, but in the moment it only ticked him off more. To him it only seemed like she concerned herself with breaking the two apart rather than how he felt.
“No no! I’m done with this!” Cain argued, “You keep talking about me hearing you out but you have not been listening to me. You kidnapped me to talk to me, then you started preaching about how my boyfriend’s and I’s love is invalid, and then you refuse to let me leave!”
“Mr. Harlow—“
A knock sounded at the door.
They both fell silent and turned to look at the sound. The Porcelain Woman answered the door, only to find another superhero he’s never seen before on the other side.
“Mr. Harlow is needed by another hero for questioning, it is required that this continues later,” the stranger at the door said to the superhero.
“Fine, bring him back as soon as they are done.” She shot a glare over to Cain, but stepped out of the way to let him pass.
A wave of relief washed over him to finally get away from her as he stepped past her next to the stranger. He didn’t know where he was going but hopefully it would be better. If it entailed questioning, maybe not.. but here’s to hoping.
The two walked through the corridors of the unfamiliar agency. After a minute or two, the stranger spoke to him. And as soon as he did, it practically made him want to fall into its arms on the spot.
Ensuring no one was around, the stranger shifted into a different person, returning to the form of his boyfriend. Telepathically it spoke gently to him, “Are you okay baby..? I’m going to get you out of here, just play along and act as if I’m one of the heroes.”
“I’m okay..” Cain mumbled, watching as Vortex shapeshifted back into the hero, “Thank you for finding me.”
It telepathically reassured him that it would always find him. It noticed that he never came home on time and wasn’t answering any of its messages alerting it that something was wrong.
Being fully disguised as a hero, Vortex escorted Cain safely out of the building without alarm. The pair headed home where they could have a relaxing evening like they originally had planned.
It didn't have to be this way -(villain!James - 1)
(June of doom 2)
“It didn’t have to be this way.”
| Scream | Double Cross | Made to Watch |
This is the first part of a story I've been thinking about for a few years by now, in which James' career as a hero takes a turn when he finds out how corrupt his team leader is. I still need to figure out a hero name for her and a few other people, but I hope to get this story going now.
contains: Kidnapping, vaguely mentioned torture.
~
James tapped on the cloaking device on his suit and darkness spilled out over the fabric like a shadow; concealing the blue color. It really had been a genius invention for those times more discretion was needed, and when following a criminal through the city streets at night it definitely was.
The target was suspected of belonging to a criminal network that had proven particularly hard to pin down and expose. It likely would have been relatively easy for James to bring the suspect into custody, but another person they'd caught had proven that questioning was futile so James had decided to try another approach; maybe that person could lead him to some place of importance. If not, well, then he would have to just bring the suspect in.
Quietly as he could, James followed the man through the dimly lit streets, making sure that he wasn't noticed by the man he was following. That led him to a building which from the outside looked rather unsuspecting, but hopefully this would be something useful. Just before the door closed James used his power, a blue glow dancing across his fingers, as he focused on the door and stopped it from fully closing and locking.
He waited for a few moments, then walked up to the door and entered the building, carefully keeping an eye out for anyone else who could discover him. Granted the dark camouflage from the cloaking device helped him blend into the shadows of the corridor but it did not make him invisible. This was a risky move especially since he was alone, but danger was just part of the job.
Suddenly James heard footsteps from behind, and he hurried a few steps down the hall to hide in what seemed to be some sort of utility or storage room to avoid being noticed.
“Stop crying, you brought this upon yourself. Did you really think that double-crossing the Sinclairs would work out for you?” A woman said, and to James' surprise the voice was very familiar. That sounded like Cordelia, the leader of his team. Sure enough, through the keyhole of the door James could see her coming down the corridor accompanied by Rigel, dragging a bruised up man with them. Neither of them were in their hero suits, but the fact that she was here with a clearly injured person was even stranger. What the hell was going on?
James watched as well as he could from his vantage point as she knocked on a door further down the hall which quickly opened. He couldn't see who it was from where he was standing, but he could hear a man’s voice. “Ah there we have the traitor.”
“Told you I could get him for you.” Cordelia smirked, and that sort of cold satisfaction was something James hadn't seen on her face before. What was going on? Why was she here, handing over some injured person to an unknown man? That wasn't how they did things.
“You did, and I never doubted you. You’ve been very good at keeping your promises and making sure your little heroes don't get too close to our business. Want to stay and help deal with him? Could be fun.” Chillingly enough, the man sounded amused, but Cordelia's reply was worse.
“Sure, I have time.” Cordelia walked into the room with Rigel, dragging the man in with her who still pleaded and seemed even more scared than before.
James' mind was reeling with what he'd just witnessed. Their team leader knew these criminals? Very well it seemed. She’d been making sure the team didn't figure out who they were? That was incredibly shocking. James really wanted to believe that she was playing the long game, that she was just going undercover to gather information but it certainly didn't seem like that. If that was the case, why had she been hiding that information from the rest of the team? No, something was very wrong here.
Quietly he cracked the door open and looked both ways down the hall to check to make sure no one else was coming, then stepped out of the room. James walked over to the door Cordelia had entered through and peeked through the keyhole. He needed to see this, to make sure this situation really was what it seemed to be. And unfortunately, that seemed to be the case. The man was tied down to a chair and Cordelia, Rigel and an unknown man in a suit were standing in front of him.
“I’m really disappointed in you, Rodger. You know what we do with traitors.” The man in the suit said.
“Really a shame,” Cordelia added and James' eyes widened as he realized she was wielding a knife. The man’s begging became desperate but turned into a bloodcurdling scream as Cordelia plunged the knife into his skin.
Horrified, James gasped and stepped back; utterly shocked by what he'd seen. Cordelia had always seemed kind and to value justice, this just didn't make sense. Another scream rang out and James stepped back further. He needed to call for backup, because as much as he wanted to stop this immediately James knew that taking on both Cordelia and Rigel as well as armed criminals wasn't the best idea.
“What the fuck?!” A voice snapped James out of his shocked state and he spun around to a man with a gun pointed at him. Out in the open like this the cloaking device didn't do enough to fully hide him.
Instinctively James flicked his hand out and a blue glow pushed the man aside. The gun went off with a loud bang, though it thankfully missed him. It definitely drew attention though because soon the door opened and Cordelia stepped out, bloodied knife in hand. “What’s going on?” She began, but stilled when she saw James. “Fuck,” she cursed. She made a motion with her hand and the little metal circle on his hero suit crumbled into a ball and fell to the floor, revealing his blue suit.
“Zenith,” Cordelia sighed. “You’re not supposed to be here,”
“I’m not supposed to be here?” James cut her off, voice raised. “I’m trying to do my job!” he'd never felt so betrayed in his life. How could Cordelia possibly justify this?
“James,” she began and James tensed. They weren't supposed to use their real names in public, that just further proved that she wasn't just playing a part here. “I can explain everything, this doesn't have to change anything. You can still do your job, just not here.”
James really couldn't believe what he was hearing. “You mean turn a blind eye?” His voice was incredulous. This was against everything he believed. How could Cordelia of all people, their team leader, be involved with something like this?
“Yes, exactly. You turn a blind eye to this, forget what you saw here and things can go back to normal. And for your silence, you’ll be paid very well.” Cordelia smirked, as if she was sure that would be enough.
Now James was offended, and he scoffed. “You think you can buy my silence?” Did she think his morals were so easily swayed by some money?
“James,” her eyes narrowed and now there was a deadly sharpness in her voice. “It would be wise of you to accept my offer. I’ll give you one more chance to rethink this and make the right decision.”
Despite the clear threat, James shook his head and stepped back. He just couldn't go along with this, this wasn't right. No matter what she would do to him, James just couldn't go along with it. “No, this- this isn't right!” He reached for his communicator, he needed to call for backup right now!
Cordelia sighed, looking disappointed. “That's a shame. You were good on the team, James. But remember, this was your choice.” In a flash, she hurled the knife at him, using her power to control metal to direct it right at him.
The fight that broke out was nasty. James never got the chance to call for backup, Cordelia had broken his communicator and just like he'd expected, fighting Cordelia and Rigel as well as armed people was a challenge. He'd sustained some cuts and bruises and he stumbled back; body aching and his head spun. James grit his teeth and glared at Cordelia as he pulled himself together.
“Remember James, it didn't have to be like this.” Cordelia’s voice was sharp but smug, almost mocking. As if she was so sure she would win.
James breathed heavily. This was really, really bad. He had to get out of here, because this fight wasn't going well. And he had to warn the rest of the team. As Cordelia stepped closer, James' eyes flicked up to the ceiling. That could work… With quite a lot of effort James' focused his power on the ceiling which started to crack
“Oh no you do-” Before Cordelia could finish that the ceiling caved in. Some of the debris hit her but most fell on the floor between them, blocking the path. James whirled around and fled, managing to make his way out of the building
Hero Whumpers are so GOOD. There’s so many different flavors.
Hero Whumper who sees beating up Villains as their job and doesn’t see any reason to hold back. They’re the scum of the earth to them— maybe not even people.
Hero Whumper who uses their status as an excuse for the things they do. They’re a Hero, who is anyone to question what they do? They save the city day in and day out, they should be above the law. Hell, maybe they even see themselves as god-like.
Hero Whumper who is just doing as they are told. Capture the Villain, get information out of them at any cost— They’re not cruel out of malice, only necessity. Maybe they feel bad. Maybe they make sure to patch them up afterwards. But if their superiors tell them to do one thing, they do it, no questions asked. It’s how they were trained, after all.
Hero Whumper who genuinely believes they’re doing the right thing even if they’re not. The road to hell is paved with good intentions— it’s just for the city. Anything for the public. This is necessary.
Hero Whumper who doesn’t hold back even with other Heroes. Maybe they take out those who rank higher than them. Maybe they push around the newbies so they know their place. Maybe they just see themselves as superior— or maybe alternatively they feel inferior and they need to take it out on someone who’s ‘Better’ than them in some way to get rid of the feeling. Maybe they’re just making sure everyone follows their rule, or trains them to be better and to their standards. Maybe they target ‘Villain Sympathizers’ specifically.
Just. So many things you could do, and that's not even bringing into account using their powers as tools for whump.
Hello! I just read your Out of Control pieces and I love them! Would it be possible to ask for part 8?
🌻
Hi anons! I'm so glad you guys like Out of Control so much! Thank you so much for your patience. Here is the final part and epilogue of Out of Control!
Part 1, Part 2, Part 3, Part 4, Part 5, Part 6, Part 7
Part 8
Hero watched Villain take a deep breath as they opened the door.
“Villain, Hero,” Superhero said, Member 1 and Member 2 on either side of them, “come quietly before this gets messy.”
“It’s gotten messy enough with you interfering,” Villain snapped.
“Really?” Superhero scoffed, “if we hadn’t ‘interfered’, Hero would still be in your base, barely able to stand.”
“They were helping me, Superhero,” Hero said, “if it wasn’t for them I’d still be half-frozen!”
Superhero’s eyes narrowed.
“What do you mean?” they asked.
Hero explained how, after Villain had rescued them from Superhero, Villain had built a chamber designed to absorb Hero’s excess cryo-energy. Hero was only weakened because the process had taken a lot of energy out of them.
“Hero would’ve recovered in a matter of hours,” Villain added, “but you and your league never stop to think about these things, do you? No, it’s always ‘punch first, ask questions later’.”
Superhero’s communicator vibrated in their pocket. They picked it up and answered it.
“Yes?”
“We’ve examined Villain’s base,” a league member said, “there’s some kind of giant box in here that radiates heat.”
“Thank you, Member 3,” Superhero sighed, “I’m talking to Villain now, you’re clear to exit their base.”
“Will do.”
There was a click, and Superhero pocketed the communicator.
“You sent league members to raid my base!?” Villain bristled.
“had to figure out what you had used on Hero to make them weakened,” Superhero explained, “we only searched the one room.”
“Oh, well if it was just the one room,” Villain said, their voice dripping with sarcasm.
“Villain, we’re sorry,” Superhero said, “clearly this has been a misunderstanding.”
“You think?” Hero scoffed, folding their arms across their chest.
“We won’t press any charges,” Superhero continued, “Hero, you’re free to come back to the base.”
Hero looked at Villain, then grabbed their hand.
“Actually, I won’t be returning to the base,” Hero said.
“I beg your pardon?”
“Villain and I are moving,” Hero said, “as soon as possible. I’ll get my things from the league and then you won’t be seeing me again.”
“Hero-” Superhero started.
Hero held up a hand.
“Stop, just stop,” Hero said, “I can’t work with people that I can’t trust. At least I can trust Villain. I’ll meet you back at the base to hand in my badge, then we’re leaving.”
Hero pushed past Superhero and the two league members, taking Villain with them. When they reached the league van they had commandeered, Hero turned to Villain.
“You meant what you said, right?” Hero asked shyly.
Villain pulled Hero in close.
“Every word,” they said earnestly.
“Then let’s go,” Hero said, “I heard Other City is nice this time of year, and there’s no league there.”
“Sounds perfect,” Villain said.
Hero got in the driver’s seat while Villain slid into the passenger’s seat next to them. They stopped at the league base to get Hero’s things, then Villain’s base to pack. Their new lives were waiting for them.
Epilogue
“Villain,” Hero called, “dinner’s ready!”
“Coming!”
Villain strode into the kitchen and hugged Hero from behind.
“Did you get up to anything today?” Hero asked, ladling servings of soup into two bowls.
“Oh, you know, robbed a jewelry store here, rescued a kitten there,” Villain said, “I’m not sure if I like villainy or heroism more.”
“Maybe you should become a vigilante,” Hero giggled.
“Whatever I am, I’m fine with just being Hero’s Spouse,” Villain said with a smile.
The phrase absolute power corrupts absolutely is a popular proverb that has been around for centuries. Its powerful message speaks to the dangers of giving one person too much power and control. The origin of this phrase is not clear, but it has been attributed to several historical figures, including Sir John Dalberg-Acton and Lord Acton.
The proverb highlights the idea that when people are given too much power and control, they can become corrupt and abuse their position for personal gain. This can lead to negative consequences for the people they are supposed to serve, as well as for society as a whole.
The dangers of absolute power are not just limited to corrupt leaders, but can also be seen in corporations, institutions, and other organizations. When these entities have too much control, they can become abusive, leading to negative consequences for society.
Historical Context The idea of absolute power corrupting absolutely has been around for centuries and has been observed in various historical contexts.
The Roman Empire was marked by the concentration of power in the hands of a few people, who often abused their positions for personal gain. The French Revolution was driven by the desire to overthrow a corrupt and abusive ruling class.
The proverb has also been applied to more-recent events, such as the Watergate scandal, which exposed corruption at the highest levels of the US government, and the Enron scandal, which revealed widespread corruption and abuse of power within a major corporation.
The Importance of Limits on Power The idea that absolute power corrupts absolutely highlights the importance of placing limits on the power of individuals and organizations — particularly within governments. This can be achieved through checks and balances, such as an independent judiciary, a free press, and a robust political opposition.
It is also important to ensure that those in power are held accountable for their actions. This can be achieved through transparency, open and accessible information, and robust systems of oversight and regulation.
Fictional Characters with Superhuman Powers Can Serve as a Powerful Allegory Fiction often provides a powerful lens through which to explore complex themes, including the dangers of absolute power. This is particularly true in stories featuring characters with supernatural abilities, who — when given too much power — can wreak havoc on those around them.
In J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter series, Lord Voldemort represents the dangers of absolute power. Through his quest for ultimate power, he becomes a cruel and tyrannical leader who will stop at nothing to achieve his goals.
In the X-Men universe, Magneto is a powerful mutant who seeks to take control of the world in order to protect mutants from persecution. Although his intentions may be noble, his methods are often brutal and indiscriminate, leading to conflict and tragedy.
These fictional characters serve as cautionary tales, highlighting the dangers of absolute power. They remind us of the importance of challenging the control of those who hold absolute power of any kind.
Conclusion The recurrent warning absolute power corrupts absolutely has been illustrated in many contexts, real and fictional. From historical examples of corrupt leaders and institutions to fictional characters with supernatural abilities, the dangers of absolute power have been made abundantly clear.
When power is concentrated in the hands of a few, it can lead to corruption and abuse. By promoting accountability, limiting power, and ensuring transparency, we can be on guard against granting anyone absolute power.
