That's not true they usually get a call from their agent first

(I’m definitely about to yap here because I learnt a new thing so be warned 😅)

Not always, if they have no trade protection in the form of a No-Trade Clause or No Movement Clause then they can find out either by a call from their agent or from social media, especially since sometimes it may be shared online before a players agent has the chance to call them. There’s multiple instances of players who find out about their own trades from TV, social media, friends and even reporters.

There have even been moments where players have been pulled from the ice mid game due to a trade finalisation they were not entirely expecting.

Examples of these include:

Matt Duchene, 2017, who, while he had requested a trade, was unaware of any timeline or official dates and was pulled from the ice mid game with his former team the Colorado Avalanche against the New York Islanders and was told about his trade to the Ottawa Senators.

Marc-André Fleury, 2021, did not request his trade from the Vegas Golden Knights to the Chicago Blackhawks, and whilst he was notified via his agent, he only received a call after the news broke on twitter and had to be called due to his own lack of social media (he also considered retiring because of said trade if I remember correctly).

Cory Schneider, 2013, who was unaware of his trade from the Vancouver Canucks to the New Jersey Devils which took place during draft picks, and found out via text from TSN reporter James Duthie asking wether he was being traded to New Jersey, Schneider answered with confusion and upon being prompted by Duthie to turn on the draft saw Gary Bettman announce his trade.

I’m almost positive there’s more examples of players learning about their trades through anyone but their agents but it’s 1:30am and I think I’ve given enough examples.

So while yes, majority of the time players are given forewarning about their trades, there are definitely many instances where players had absolutely zero forewarning and found out either alongside the public or even after.

I just met Cory Schneider at a random store in CT and I’m actually dying. My hand and knees were shaking. He’s so fucking nice.

Just found out that Cory Schneider’s teenaged nephew was killed in a house fire. My prayers are with Cory and his family as they grieve this unthinkable loss 💙🧡💙🧡 And Cory, please take all the time you need before you return to the Isles—hockey is just a game, but family is forever.
