MEGA #13, Oct 93 - Preview of ‘Cosmic Spacehead’.
Longplay of Cosmic Spacehead
Let’s talk about Cosmic Spacehead
So I was just thinking about Cosmic Spacehead for the Mega Drive (Genesis). Anyone remember that? Really cool little cross between a platformer and a puzzle game and the most 90s-looking thing you’ve ever seen. I played it so much when I was younger, but I only ever finished it as an adult ‘cos of its bullshit difficulty in places. There wasn’t anydang internet back then, so you were on your own, buddy!
My stupid little child-eyes never realised he was eating a chocolate bar in this picture. I was like ‘what the hell is that purple thing? Is he shooting some sort of purple missile out of his mouth?’
Another embarrassing admission is how long it took young me to realise there’s a south exit from this screen. So you’ve got the near west into the post office, the far west leading to the carnival, the near east into the teleporter and the far east leading to the wilderness. What I didn’t realise was that fencing in the foreground wasn’t just scenery, it’s a goddamn gate to passport control to the south. Dohhhhhh.
I actually liked the platforming segments. The controls are pretty good and I dig how his cape flutters up when you jump from a height. I always thought this enemy looked like a living loaf of bread, though.
Despite the text clearly saying he’s a dude, I always thought the passport official was a woman. ...I think I was just blind as a child.
The post office lady charges you 10 bucks for notepaper and stamps (and them’s were 1993 dollars too!). To this day I still use the phrase ‘COSMIC ROBBERY!’ when something is outrageously overpriced.
Shame on you, Codemasters. Check your grammar before shipping! Don’t make me sing the ITS/IT’S song.
Bwuh huh huh.
Must be up north, then?
...
...Sorry, I’ll see myself out.
So this secret tunnel part was utter, utter bullshit. You could only see like an inch in front of you and touching the water was an instant death, forcing you to restart the sequence all over again. There was no way of doing it without dying and over until you’ve completely memorised the path.
When giving the carnival attendant your fake driving licence, I love how she immediately forgets you told her your name is Cosmic literally two seconds before pretending to be Larry Flint.
I never got the impression that Cosmic was any older than a teenager, what with all the painfully radical slang he kept dropping. So let’s take a moment to appreciate the fact that the first third of the game has a kid:
-buying a fake driving licence -fraudulently entering a driving race -being given a missile targetting device by a stranger in a position of authority that really ought to know better -assembling a bomb and using it to inflict massive structural damage in a foreign country.
Video games, huh?
The last update for @Codemasters Cosmic Spacehead - but not really! The game actually started on the NES as a game called Linus Spacehead’s Cosmic Crusade. This was the cover for it.
