Why here, why now, why this? 

The culprits: a hyperactive imagination, a failing kidney, and a library prone to housing birds, bats, and cats

Those culprits don’t make any sense to anyone besides myself, so let’s try a more linear narrative: 

1) A kid sucks at reading and avoids it

2) A kind discovers reading is a lot like the stories she likes to make up in her own head, and gets a taste for it

3) A kind wants to try being on the storytelling side of things

4) A teenager is guilt-tripped into attending a performing arts high school 

5) A teenager intends to study biology but--

6) A young adult decides to go to undergrad for creative writing

7) An early twenty-something isn’t ready to leave school, and wants to be a better writer, so

8) An early twenty-something decides to just dip her toe in the grad school pool

9) A grad student decides she hates academia but loves teaching, and finally

10) A grad student suddenly wonders, “How the hell did this even happen?” once she starts writing her dissertation

Okay, so maybe that also isn’t an explanation. How about this: 

Someone enjoys reading. 

Hm--

Someone enjoys reading. And writing. 

That’s not good enough--

Someone enjoys reading. And writing. And researching. And teaching. And-- 

I mean--

Someone has honestly been in it for so long that she’s pretty sure there’s no way out of it at this point. 

Now, that’s the truth at last. 

This is my way of justifying a PhD in English Literature at a time when the usefulness of the humanities is constantly in question.
