The Pace Report: "An American Debut" The Count Basic Interview
After being a very successful global band, Count Basic finally made their American debut playing the famed Joe's Pub to a sold-out crowd this past August. Founded by Austrian-born guitarist, Peter Legat, Count Basic was part of the Acid Jazz scene during the 1990's and their music was played heavily on smooth jazz stations here in the US and abroad. Their debut album "Life Think It Over," released in 1994 produced the classic hit, "M.L. In The Sunshine," which continues to be a staple on radio to this day.
During their performance at Joe's Pub, both vocalist Kelli Sae and Peter Legat performed music from Count Basic's latest CD "Sweet Spot" produced by Shannon Sanders and Drew Ramsey(India Arie, John Legend, and Heather Headley).
I had a chance to speak with both Peter and Kelli during their time in NYC to talk about why it took over 20 years to play America, their new record, and Peter's musical influences and what sparked him to form Count Basic.
