RIP Chuck Mangione.
(English / Español / Italiano)
Once again we give bitter news for the music fans and the ProgJazz community.
Chuck Mangione, the celebrated trumpeter, composer and arranger, died in his sleep on Monday 21 July at his home in Rochester, New York, aged 84.
The news was officially confirmed today via his personal website, with a terse message: "We are sorry to hear of the passing of Chuck Mangione. More news soon."
His lawyer, Peter S. Matorin, also confirmed the death, stating that it occurred of natural causes.
Born and raised in Rochester, and a graduate of the Eastman School of Music, Mangione and his brother Gap Mangione were part of the legendary Jazz Messengers, led by legendary drummer Art Blakey. This experience was fundamental to his musical development and gave him an early place in the high-level jazz scene.
Mangione would later move away from hard bop to develop a more melodic and accessible style, what we would come to know over the years as "smooth jazz".
A two-time Grammy Award winner, Mangione won his first award in 1977 for best instrumental composition, and his second in 1979 for best pop instrumental performance.
His music genuinely transcended the boundaries of the jazz community, with compositions such as "Chase The Clouds Away", used at the 1976 Montreal Olympics, and "Give It All You Got", the official theme song of the 1980 Lake Placid Winter Olympics, which he performed live at the closing ceremony of the event.
His biggest commercial success came in 1978 with the song "Feels So Good", which quickly became one of the most recognisable jazz songs in history.
In a 2008 interview, Mangione reflected: "That song took us to another level of the masses. For many, it was the first time they associated a jazz melody with a name".
Rest in peace.

A new playlist is up. All Jazz.
just had a realization/made up a headcanon for chaz but like he's smooth jazz troll right?
and I've been listening to smooth jazz songs for a little while now just to get a feel for it so i can understand the vibe to write chaz for my fics
and I know for a fact that a lot of people listen to smooth jazz to calm their anxiety down and stuff not gonna lie its been kinda like that for me to recently
so here i am thinking that if i go off on one of the fandom's interpretation or maybe its just straight up canon idk BUT Chaz being the only smooth jazz troll since he created smooth jazz in the first place in the trollsverse
what if he created smooth jazz out of the need to calm himself down because of his problems?
Then overtime he just perfected it to be flexible for more different songs and that's what he is now in the present and he really only plays for himself because there isn't anyone there that is actually willing to listen to his music because it takes time to grow a tolerance for smooth jazz for it not to hypnotize a troll
GUUHHHHH
I'm getting chazdory visions just by writing this...
