A/N– This is my first piece of writing since graduating high school. Let me know if it gives 4.0 GPA & honor society graduate or if I’m fucked when I start college 😭✌️
The classroom buzzed with soft excitement as students settled into their seats. A few near the front whispered to each other, trying (and failing) to keep their voices down.
“Prince Roy is teaching today…”
“I wonder what he’ll teach this time…”
“He’s so composed…”
A ripple of quiet giggles followed — the kind that always filled the room before his lectures.
Then the door opened.
Silence fell instantly.
Roy stepped inside with his usual calm grace, golden eyes warm as they swept across the room.
“Good evening,” he said, voice smooth and steady.
A handful of students squealed under their breath — tiny, muffled sounds they tried desperately to hide.
Roy smiled at them and then moved on.
He moved to the front of the class, hands folding neatly.
“Let us begin.”
And just like that, the lesson started.
But something was off.
Roy’s posture was perfect, his tone steady, his explanations clear — yet there was a faint tension around his eyes. A stiffness in his smile. His voice held a subtle strain only someone close to him would notice.
You watched him carefully, worry settling in your chest.
When the lecture ended, Roy dismissed the class with his usual elegance.
“Thank you for your attention. That concludes today’s lesson.”
Students swarmed him immediately, eager to speak with him, but Roy offered a polite, immovable smile.
“I must attend to another matter. Please save your questions for next time.”
He slipped away before anyone could protest.
You, Sherry, and Rio walked out together.
You exhaled softly. “…Roy seemed off today.”
Sherry nodded immediately, her expression gentle. “I thought so too.”
Rio frowned. “Yeah. He was too stiff, even for him.”
Sherry hesitated before adding, “He received a letter from home this afternoon.”
You glanced at her in surprise. “A letter?”
She nodded. “I didn’t see what it said. But… he didn’t look pleased.”
Rio crossed his arms. “Roy hides things too well. But even I could tell something’s wrong.”
Your mind lingered on the thought long after you parted ways.
What could a letter from Invidia have said to shake him like that?
Later, you returned to your room — needing a moment to think.
The moment you opened the door, a small winged shape drifted up from your pillow.
“Robin—!”
He floated straight toward you, bumping his forehead against your cheek before curling around your neck, purring softly. His wings fluttered lazily, keeping him balanced.
You stroked his fur. “Hey. I’m back.”
Robin pulled back just enough to look at you, ears drooping. “Mrr… something happened.”
You sat on the bed, and he drifted down into your lap, tail curling around your wrist.
“Roy got a letter,” you said quietly. “Whatever was in it… it upset him.”
Robin let out a low, sad “mrrrrooo…” Then, softly: “Roy is hurting.”
You nodded. “I know. He hid it well, but… I could see it.”
Robin lifted off your lap, hovering right in front of your face. His wings fluttered faster — his version of urgency.
“You should go.”
You met his eyes. “You think he’ll talk to me?”
Robin bobbed in the air, a firm nod. “He trusts you.”
Your chest tightened — not with worry, but with resolve. “Then I’ll go.”
Robin drifted back to your pillow, curling into a little ball. “Mrr. Be brave.”
You left your room and headed straight for the princes’ wing. If Roy wasn’t in class anymore, his chambers were the most logical place to check.
You knocked softly.
The door opened just enough for Grayson, Roy’s impeccably composed valet, to appear. His posture was perfect, his expression polite.
“Good evening,” he greeted gently. “How may I assist you?”
You hesitated only a moment. “I was looking for Roy. Is he here?”
Grayson’s eyes softened with understanding. “I’m afraid His Highness is not in his chambers.”
Your heart dipped. “Do you know where he went?”
“Of course.” Grayson inclined his head. “He stepped out to the rooftop garden a while ago.”
Relief washed through you. “Thank you, Grayson.”
“It is my pleasure,” he replied with a small bow. “Please… take care of him.”
You nodded and hurried toward the Academy’s rooftop garden — a small, peaceful space framed by climbing vines and soft flowers. The breeze carried a gentle coolness, and the hush of the place made it feel worlds away from the busy halls below.
Roy often retreated here when he needed space.
You found him sitting on the garden bench, hands folded neatly in his lap. His posture was perfect, but his eyes were shadowed with something heavy and unguarded.
He looked up when he heard your footsteps. “Ah… Heartspell. Would you like to sit?”
You shook your head gently. “Not yet.”
Roy blinked, surprised — the faintest crack in his composure.
“Sherry told me you got a letter,” you said softly. “You don’t have to tell me what it said. But I know you’re not alright.”
His breath hitched — barely, but enough.
“As your paramour,” you continued, “I’m here to support you. But even without that title… I care. I want to help.”
Roy’s composure finally broke. He stood, closing the distance between you.
“It was news from Invidia,” he murmured. “A matter I should have foreseen. Father is handling it, but… I feel I’ve failed him. As the future king, I should be able to do more.”
You reached for him, and he stepped into your arms, holding you tightly — as if he’d been waiting all day for permission to fall apart.
His voice was barely a whisper against your shoulder. “Heartspell… may we stay like this for a while?”
You held him closer. “As long as you need.”
When he finally pulled back, his smile — small, tired, but real — warmed his golden eyes.
“I prefer this one,” you said softly. “Your real smile.”
Roy exhaled, the tension easing from his shoulders. “For you, Heartspell… It's always real.”
