The reason we know we are to pursue those we're called to love lies in the reality of who God is and who we are as his covenant people. The reality of God's divine love we experience should overflow into the daily love others experience from us.

I might argue that the main purpose of any relationship, though marriage especially, should be to improve the other person. In most relationships that is done only through nonjudgmental love and support but in covenantal relationships, such as marriage, this can be more direct and confrontational, but always, always with love.
