The Not So Ancient Practice of Sewing The Buttons Back On
Although plenty of dry cleaners do a fine job, and either cover with foil, or snip off and sew back on the buttons on suits (for a fee), I always do the job myself.
The fear is that you will lose a special button or that it will be ruined. I have had metal buttons lose their sheen and plastic buttons which look like metal lose their metallic look and turn into something unrecognizable. I also have had my own covered buckles appear to explode into their various pieces after a trip to the cleaners.
Since I have had a lot of special covered buttons made, losing them is not an option. So I have been sewing my suit buttons back on. This is a lambswool suit with color and cuffs and buttons in matching cotton velveteen. Although one could think of the entire process as a pain in the butt, it is so simple a task that I can listen to the radio or a podcast or even engage in conversation as I do this. And the odd thing is that I find it so satisfying. I get them all back on in a row, I think how very nice the garment turned out, how I look forward to wearing it soon, and then go hang it up.
In short, I enjoy the moment, the past, and the future.
Pretty good for a small job with needle and thread.
