Servant of the Underworld - Aliette de Bodard This is an unusual trilogy for me. I read a lot of fantasy, but it's either ye plain olde run-of-the-mill fantasy or worlds based on Celts or Ancient Greeks. Aliette de Bodard's Obsidian and Blood trilogy is based on Aztec, which I almost never read about. Funnily enough, the only other books with a small Mesoamerican flavour I've read are another fantasy series, the Craft Sequence by Max Gladstone (😘 the King in Red). Aliette de Bodard is more historical which prompted me to scour the Wikipedia page of Mexico City (and other related pages: I discovered Maya blue amongst other stuff). A priestress disappeared and the High Priest for the Dead investigates, urged by the fact his brother is the prime suspect. Soon, Acatl finds out that things are a whole lot more complex that he thought. The world building is excellent and very unsettling: someone is pale like a fawn, you can't think in red and black, they eat newts (all the time! Where can I try a fried newt in Paris and see if I can pop it whole in my mouth?). Magic is entirely linked to the gods, animal and human sacrifices abound. Gods are jealous, malicious, with hudden agendas. I enjoyed this trilogy (yes, I read the whole trilogy). Characters are complex and multi-layered, I didn't feel I was reading standard fantasy clichés and of course, I loved all the world building #ServantoftheUnderworld #ObsidianandBlook #AliettedeBodard #bookstagram #instabook #bookstagrammer #novel #fantasy #aztec #Mesoamerica #Mexico #Tenochtitlan #MaxGladstone #Craftsequence #Twoserpentsrise #KinginRed #instalivre #novel #book #books
