I know it’s a bit late but here is tutorial for the creature power suit I made :)
So what you’ll need is: cutter knife, spray paint in the preferred power suits color, white and matt black, acrylic paint in a lighter color; masking tape; superglue; contact adhesive; hot glue gun; Foam (7mm can be 5mm and buy more than you think you need it will give some lee way); maybe a thinner Foam; sponge or sponge like foam (doesn’t need a lot); acrylic Christmas ornaments (4cm diameter); Wireless lamp, preferable with light changing but it isn’t needed; Velcro tape; template for a normal vest; measurements for torso, chest, arm/shoulder area, width of the space between neck and shoulder; a fuck ton of patience; disposable gloves; heat gun (optional); sand paper/Dremel (optional); a nice friend who you employ for help :) (you know who you are)
I need to warn that the ability of moving your arms is extremely limited
You can’t touch hands stretched out, you can’t fully hang your arms, getting in and out needs help so I would recommend dying that different to me, you can’t really carry a bag, it looks odd from the side when on, it puffs up when sitting down
Also I have no pictures or videos of the actual process so this is purely from memory
Get the vest template and look how it fits you… now add 5 cm of lee way but only on the places where you will glue it later, more might be needed so keep on testing till it looks good and measure the space between your head and top of the shoulder, we used the entire width of this which was roughly 9 cm for me. Crop it to look more accurate and see how it looks.
If your satisfied with the shape place it on the foam tape it to so it doesn’t move and trace it on.
Once cut out test it again if it roughly fits. If there is to much access cut it off, it largely relies on trial and error
Sand it if want you want smoother edges but it could take a while, We didn’t and you can barely see it, also the Dremel wasn’t working correctly
Take the front and lay out the lamp and acrylic half spheres it the paw shape and trace it on and cut it out before gluing. Paint the acrylic half spheres from the inside, start with lighter color and layer it until it looks good holding it into the light helps see imperfections, then use the spray paint to seal it.
Glue the front and back side together and it will look bulky when it’s not on, I would recommend butting an easier way out of it ESPECIALLY if you will use a heat gun to form it!
I can’t say how you should do it since we didn’t use a heat gun because of concern for safety and lack of mannequin. We glued all sides together looked where it made weird bulges and was too big, the shoulders especially budged up in a triangle shape if that happens cut of a triangle shape and so one side attaches a bit more diagonally and in the best case it won’t do it or is less obvious. Other pumps have to be left or shapen out with a heat gun but most becomes less obvious with the other details… which leads me to
Use the foam as a guide on the size for the details and make a template of the details of the creature power suit, the previous template for the back piece of the creature power suit can be folded and cut in shape of the back design, the details will be wider than what they have, if It’s available for you use a thinner foam for it it will forgive much more and be easier to maneuver your arms, otherwise the underarm pieces will bend and rub off their color. (I know I still need to fix mine)
and you don’t have to cut out the details but rather make one block and mask them just mask it with the masking tape something like that + some references I found of the creature power suits since they are really shown from the back
Paint it! The base suit with the matt black and covers the mistakes like numbs, discoloration, the left over glue and other mistakes. For the smaller details first prime it with white after a bit paint it with the desired color.
Fully drying will take a while so if you test it after a day of waiting don’t wear anything bright it will be stained. Mine took three days to fully dry and not give my shirts weird black streaks.
The contact adhesive won’t work with the painted surfaces so superglue is needed. Remove the masking tape and put the peices on the right side and glue em down. Depending on how you take on and off system works it will be different we directly glued all of it on, the back piece took two people and nearly an entire bottle of superglue. All points on the side won’t necessarily be connected too and might need to be fixed after a long day of wearing the west, it shouldn’t fall of tho.
To attach the lamp and acrylic half spheres, if the acrylic has the little attachment points where thread goes through cut it off by heating up the cutter knife. Cut of a pice of the sponge so it fills the acrylic half sphere hot glue it in. Use left over foam, preferably thinner, and attach it to the sponge in the sphere. Attach this to the inside of the creature power suit and repeat it for the other two.
Something like this, it doesn’t need to be pretty
The lamp is fully removable due to the Velcro attach the Velcro on the backside so it faces towards the Lamp, hot glue works with this. Attach the other side of the of the Velcro tape on the inside of the creature power suit like seen in the picture above. It’s not important which side of the Velcro on which object but I would recommend using the fluffier side on the inside of the suit since it doesn’t stick to your clothing.
And that’s it :) I don’t think I have forgotten anything and if instructions are unclear I am happy to answer any questions
Specifically @dead-star asked for a tutorial for it so here you go
