This is my all time high most inspiring speaks! Michael Bierut is a graphic designer, a design critic and also educator. This talk from 2010 at CreativeMornings, about working with clients is excellent and inspiring.
Bierut works at Pentagram, an international design agency. http://www.pentagram.com/ . Naturally he talks from his perspective and experiences as a designer. Working at Creuna, a Nordic digital agency, since 2005 I can sign under almost everything he says from my own experiences and point of view.
Among some of my key take away points inspired by his speach:
We don't teach clients! It is our job to guide them and lead the job, they shouldn't have to learn everything we do. Just as my dance teacher A Ni Mal once said: "If my students don't succeed in learning this step or that choreography it is my fault as a teacher and I need to change my way of teaching." Ok, of course there are limits, you can speak of your experiences with a client, on how to form a winning partnership. But you can not change another person. So, if you don't succeed over time and reach a win-win relationship, you will most likely go separate ways.
The best clients have courage, are smart and wants to do good! They don't take no for an answer in their own organization without checking why and they pick upp the telephone directly just to double check.
A designer should in a client meeting talk about the clients business like at least 98% of the time! Not talk about fonts and colors with the client. That is also the focus we need to lift the clients business and reach their goals through digital! This of course applies to other skills as well. The project manager needs an overall perspective - where we are going like strategically, aligned with the clients overall business goals. The developers need to be able to accept prioritize fixing issues that actually affects the clients business and the end users. Might be that some small really hot fixes that a developer is proud of, cannot be prioritized, if it don't really give enough effect!
If you do bad work for bad clients, you will most likely just end up with more bad work for more bad clients.
As you might have understood by now, Bierut is really one of my idols, just by have watching this seminar. I have watched this 3 times already, showed it for my project managers at Creuna and always recommends it. Will probably watch it again in the future.
Some quotes from Michael Bierut:
"Not everything is design. But design is about everything. So do yourself a favor: be ready for anything."
"Graphic design is the purposeful combination of words, pictures and other visual elements to support the communication of an explicit or implicit message."
