My friend @tricialevenseller tagged me to share the word counts of my books. Definitely check out the post where she shares hers, because she does a great job explaining why the publishing industry focuses on word counts vs. page numbers, and what word counts are encouraged when trying to sell speculative YA fiction. ✏️ 80k is probably the sweet spot, and as you can see, my word counts usually exceed that...which is why I also wanted to include additional word counts (swipe right), so you can see the bigger picture for my books. ✏️ Here’s a breakdown of my terms: First draft - the initial draft I turn in to my editor, which has already been self-revised. Revised draft - the draft I turn in to my editor after our first big round of content edits. Final draft - the published book. ✏️ Also, keep in mind that my agent sold the Burning Glass trilogy as a trilogy (some books in a series are sold one by one to the publisher), so it was sold based off my my first draft of Burning Glass (90k words) and a synopsis of books two and three. On the other hand, Bone Crier’s Moon was sold to my same editor as a duology, based off a partial draft of book one and a synopsis of book two. ✏️ I mention all of this because some of my final word counts are fairly high, and I wouldn’t recommend trying to sell a YA manuscript that’s over 90k, especially if you’re a debut author. My word counts increased in the process of revisions with my editor. ✏️ It’s also interesting to note that my two sequels in the Burning Glass trilogy, Crystal Blade and Frozen Reign, were initially much longer than they ended up when published, whereas other books of mine started smaller and ended up much bigger. Each story requires a different word count in the end, and the ones whose vary the most in the process are the books I had to most drastically revise. ✏️ If you’re a writer, what word counts do your first drafts tend to be?
