From Ancient Greek κύβος (cube, square, dice, cubic number)
Clavicle, Coccygeal vertebrae (coccyx), and cuboid bone. Decided to use charcoal for the last because I haven't used charcoal in forever.
Galen Rupp Cuboid Bone Culprit
I know we weren't the only ones excited for the New Balance Men's Mile Saturday at the NB Indoor Grand Prix (Boston, MA). It was a huge field (Willis, Rupp, Lomong, Manzano) and looked to be a great race, but things did not go as expected. We saw Galen Rupp pull out just before the 1200 meter mark, looking in pain. We found out later that Galen had an issue with his cuboid bone in his foot, had it realigned and after 8k of hard intervals he was doing fine!
We look forward to what Galen will be doing next!

Apparently my cuboid bone is right where it's supposed to be, hooray!
Unfortunately, it's loose and my ankle is tight, probably due to all the injuries it's sustained over the years.
But thankfully I caught it just as the problems were starting, so this is fixable.
Basically what's happening is that the bone is jiggling around and aggravating nerves and ligaments and tendons and stuff. That causes me to have plantar fascitis-like pain in my heel, but it isn't actually plantar fascitis (she tested for that and it was negative). It also causes some cuboid syndrome symptoms (that numbness I had in my foot was probably due to this, especially because it does come back once in a while, and she said the bone may have actually slipped out then and gone back on its own).
So I have exercises to do 2-3 times a day, and I'm to go for a five minute walk after the exercises and then roll a frozen bottle of water under my foot for 3-5 minutes.
I can't do any high impact exercise. Aquacize is fine, recumbent bike is fine, but other than that I have to be careful. I can do regular walking around but not for exercise except that five minutes at a time. We're going to work up to 30 minutes walking and then start doing interval running. I will be able to run again, just not yet.

So it turns out I've been running around on 2 stress fractures for 7 weeks
And all I wear are flimsy flip flops.
The foot doc/MRI says that I have stress fractures on my cuboid bone and the top of the 2nd metatarsal. Who knew? oops.
Now I gotta wear a boot for a month or two :( I feel like a Transformer.
