@cullensource | Cullen Week 2021: Day Four -> Thirst
“Scars”
I had plenty of fun drawing this one
@cullensource
For Cullen Week! Prompt: Scars I tried to convey Cullen’s inner scars in the form of nightmares. I used a stock photo for reference and loved the deep shadows. This is watercolor and Prisma colors. Please be kind. This is literally the first time I’ve done a human being in these mediums and the 2nd time to ever use them at all. (The first one was a portrait of a dog.) @cullensource
Scars
For day 1 of @cullensource Cullen Week 2021 I am sharing my first work for "Scars"
Can be found here: AO3
This snippet is part of my "Warden Ari" series. Ari is a Cousland and the Hero of Ferelden:
“So where’d this come from?” Ari pointed to her upper lip while watching Cullen.
“I broke up a fight between two young Templars. Tensions were incredibly high after the events with Meredith. Wish I could say it was a rare occurrence; the men fighting I mean,” he shrugged.
Ari shook her head, “That’s an awful story. ‘I got this scar from two nineteen year olds.’ You need something heroic, like this,” she lifted up her shirt to show a rather ugly, pink, raised scar on her abdomen. “This was from when we fought a High Dragon in the Blight. If it weren’t for Wynne I wouldn’t have made it.”
“Ooo, what’s that from,” Hawke joined them, looking at Ari’s scar.
“High Dragon,” Ari explained as she lowered her shirt.
“You fought a High Dragon?” Hawke’s eyes widened in surprise.
“Two. Well three if you count the Archdemon,” Ari answered.
“Why wouldn’t you count the Archdemon?” Cullen asked.
“I mean I don’t want to sound like I’m bragging,” Ari shrugged.
“Yeah, pretty sure that’s something you brag about,” Hawke chuckled. “Here look at this,” she raised her shirt to show a nasty scar on her side. “Got this when I fought the Arishok. You remember that, Cullen?”
“That’s not really something one forgets,” Cullen smirked.
“Hawke, why is your shirt up?” Fenris approached with Varric and immediately reached out to pull his wife’s shirt down.
“We were comparing scars,” she explained. “Show them the one on your arm.”
“It’s not much of a scar, Hawke,” Fenris shook his head.
“Oh come on, please,” she batted his eyes.
Fenris rolled his eyes but humored her just the same, pulling up his sleeve. As he’d said, it was a thin, white scar on his bicep.
“He got that from this group that kept attacking up in Hightown. I mean once I get, but after the third time it was getting sad,” Hawke shook her head.
“Anders didn’t heal it for you?” Ari was surprised.
“The mage was not there,” Fenris shrugged as he rolled his sleeve back down.
“You always bring your healer,” Ari scolded Hawke.
“Well I know that now ,” she laughed.
“You must have something better to share,” Ari turned her attention back to Cullen.
He thought for a moment and then pulled off his right glove. He turned it so they could see several scars on the back that clearly were from teeth.
“Where’s that from?” Hawke asked.
“My brother,” Cullen laughed as he put back on his glove. “He was mad I wouldn’t take him with me to watch some local Templars spar.”
“Why not?” Ari asked.
“He was five,” Cullen shrugged. “I didn’t want my kid brother tagging along.”
“Five?!” Ari snorted. “Maker, Cullen, that's a worse story then the other one. You're a warrior, yet you show me a bite mark from a five year old.”
“I agree,” Hawke nodded. “You need a better story. Say it came from a dracolisk.”
“Or a bear,” Ari added.
“Or a mabari,” Fenris joined in. He watched as Cullen, Ari and Hawke all turned to him in various expressions of horror.
They all started speaking at once.
“No proper mabari would ever bite someone unless in battle.”
“How could you besmirch such a noble animal?”
“Fenris, why would you say such a thing? Mabari are majestic creatures.”
Varric tugged on Fenris’ sleeve as the elf’s gaze moved between the other three.
“Come on, Broody. Let’s leave the Fereldans before you upset them more. I’ll buy you a drink.”
Fenris nodded and left with his friend.
“You need to get him a pup to imprint on him. Then he’ll understand,” Ari shook her head with a frown.
Hawke nodded, “Anyway, back to Cullen’s hand.”
“You should say Meredith bit you. Anyone would believe that,” Ari nodded to Cullen.
“Maybe I can get Varric to make a change to ‘Tale of the Champion’ to include that,” Hawke beamed.
“Oh, if he’s going to do that, I have some other suggestions,” Ari grinned.
Cullen laughed to himself. The two women were ridiculous, but they were his friends, and he loved them, silliness and all.
Aqua Magus
I finally published my fic that I wrote for Cullen Week 2021! Better late than never. I used the prompt thirst, here’s an excerpt:
...
“What are you thinking about?”
Cullen turned his gaze toward her. “Kirkwall. Kinloch Hold.” His eyes fell to the ground. “Mages. Demons. Templars. Corypheus. The Inquisition. The rifts in the bloody veil.” He scratched at his furrowed brow.
“Sounds like you need a drink,” Dorian grinned wryly. “Luckily, you’re in the right place,” he added, gesturing to the shelves above them.
Cullen let out a soft chuckle. “Unlike you lot, I don't wish to suffer our ambassador’s wrath when she reviews the inventory reports from the quartermaster. Haven’t you been banned from the wine cellar already?” he raised a brow at Dorian, who made a dismissive gesture.
“Bans only work if you’ve the men to enforce them,” he replied, taking another swig of his drink.
“You’re starting to sound like Cullen,” Elinora smiled. “He’s all, ‘Skyhold is only as strong as the army that defends it,’ and ‘our fortress in Crestwood is useless without the numbers to make holding it worthwhile.’”
“I’m your military advisor. At times, I give military advice.”
“That explains a lot,” Elinora murmured through a coy smile, leaving him a lingering glance over the edge of her cup. “And here I was thinking you swing that sword around because you like how shiny it is.”
Cullen’s lips curved into a gentle smirk.
“Ah, I know these looks. It seems that the time has come,” Dorian paused to drain the last drops of liquor from his cup, “for me to make myself scarce. Considering your history with desks, Maker knows what you have planned for the furniture down here,” he murmured as he cast a cursory glance around the room.
Elinora sputtered, drops of Aqua Magus flying from her lips. “Does everyone know about that?!” she stammered indignantly.
“To be honest, it was only a rumor, but I’m glad to have it confirmed,” Dorian cast a glistening smile at his friends before turning to head up the stairs. “Don’t have too much fun without me,” he called behind him as he ascended to Skyhold’s main hall.
“You’ll be wise to keep that particular bit of gossip to yourself, Dorian!” the Inquisitor yelled as he disappeared behind the corner, but she laughed as she set her cup down, leaning back against the wall of the cellar and turning her focus to Cullen.
