Five Seven Sentence Friday Saturday

I've been stuck in a bit of a rut regarding my longer series (a Cullavellan story, rated Explicit, called The Cadence of His Heart), so here's a bit from a Cullistair wip that has been percolating through my brain all week. This is currently set in year three of DA2.

Absolutely inspired by the resurfacing of one of my all-time favorite gifs on this here Tumblr from @froschkuss 😍 (under the cut just in case the censors get mad about gay smooches):

Like an unconscious tether, Cullen seemed drawn toward the company of his fellow countrymen every seventh of Solace, though he was rarely able to stomach them for long. His fellow Fereldans were always so… intensely expressive with their emotions. Blightsend made them jovial, and filled with nostalgia for a place that felt alien to him after all his years in the Order—and all the horrors he faced at Ferelden Circle—that he feared if he never laid eyes on his homeland again it would still be too soon. Add to the equation that most refugees in Kirkwall were impoverished, jobless, and prone to petty crime while he had the means to fill his belly every day and send earnings home to his family in… wherever they were….

The Order was still sending two-thirds of his pay to his family… weren't they?

There was no real common ground to speak of.

Tonight, it seemed to be the urge to hear the familiar cadence of the Fereldan accent—warm and comforting as a blanket—that drove him out the Chantry doors and past the merchants' quarter to the docks but the celebrations seemed muted this year; fewer fire pits, less raucous singing, far fewer lone revellers. It made sense, he supposed.

For now, our intrepid Knight-Captain is engaging in whiskey-fueled wallowing. Later:

What are you favorite Cullen fics/authors

ah! i am rather picky about the fics i read (it's a me problem) so i don't actually have that many. while i may be shorter than desired on a recs list, i like to think the few i have are the best of the best (and to me, they are! 100% some of the best fics i have ever read)

1. to be those left behind by sinister_queer on ao3; alistair/cullen, 4 chapters, 23,245 words, rated e

2. disparity by thespectaclesofthor on ao3; iron bull/cullen, 1 chapter, 4,959 words, rated e

3. always loyal, without pride by sinister_queer on ao3; cullen/trans male hawke, 1 chapter, 8,909 words, rated e

and my absolute favorite cullen author is probably sinister_queer on ao3 (can you tell) their writing is just. everything to me!

to be those left behind is currently my favorite fic that i've ever read. i bawled like a fucking baby reading it. it hurt me so bad and healed me and hurt me again. had the opportunity to tell the author that and it felt amazing. please, seriously, read it if you haven't. it will rewire your brain.
