Since the rise of the personal computer, World Wide Web, and mobile device, we've seen an explosion of innovation that has shaped today's digital culture. In your opinion, what one technology, service, or application caused the greatest disruption to one of the industries below during this period?

Without a doubt, technology, the World Wide Web, and many different applications or programs have made in huge impact in everyone’s life.  We see older generation trying to figure out how to use a computer and we see kids, young adults, and adults using mobile smart phones and tablets every day. Without the technology that we have today, we would most likely be living in a completely different world today. In my opinion, YouTube definitely caused the greatest disruption to the entertainment industries.  The reason why I think that it is the greatest disruption to the entertainment industries this period is because when YouTube was first launch in 2005 no one really expected it to have such a rapid growth.  YouTube probably started out with couple hundred million users, but now it has over a billion users today!  YouTube really changed many people’s aspect of entertainment because it is instant accesses and you can find almost anything you want to watch instantly.  

YouTube created jobs and opportunity for your everyday people and it gets people innovated to come up with many new video ideas that are different and very unique.  In the past, the way to get famous, fame, or popularity is probably only though television or become a musician. But YouTube allowed regular people to get creative and become popular themselves. There are musicians out there that have gotten great opportunity because of the fame they acquired from YouTube.  There are many YouTubers on YouTube that have a full time job making money on YouTube by producing more content.  They would have sponsor and they will get paid by the amount of views and likes they have on their videos.  

There are literality is all kinds of entertainments on YouTube, there are music videos from many different part of the world, you can directly watch movies on YouTube, and much much more.  If you think about it, YouTube is not only just a source of entertainment.  It is also a source of learning. Today we see people searching for tutorials on YouTube for their own purpose and educational purpose.  I know I have search for countless DIY videos of repairing something such as cars, decorations for cards or objects, cooking or baking, and countless number of “how to” videos.  As a student I have also search for Adobe application tutorials and videos that teaches you math or sciences. Overall YouTube is not only a great source of entertainment for many things such as music, blogs, funny videos, and much more but it is also a great source for learning how to make thing and learn school related material.

Consider some of the topics we've discussed in class (for example The Right to be Forgotten, Super-Fast Internet Lanes, PIPA, PRISM, etc.). What do you consider to be the greatest threat to the founding principles of the World Wide Web?

The World Wide Web was founded by Tim Berners-lee, a British scientist at CERN, on March of 1989. The original idea of the web being developed was to allow scientists in universities and institutes around the world to be able to share information among each other.  His visions that people would put their researches and documents up on the World Wide Web so that anyone in the world can assess that information to be innovative and gain more knowledge.  On April 30, 1993, CERN put the World Wide Web software in the public domain.  It basically maximized its dissemination for the people and made it free for anyone. On the statement for releasing the World Wide Web into public domain says “The W3 project provides a collaborative information system independent of hardware and software platform, and physical location.  The project spans technical design notes, documentation, news, discussion, education material, personal notes, publicity, bulletin boards, live status information and numerical data as a uniform continuum, seamlessly integrated with similar information in other disciplines” (Statement Concerning CERN W3 Software Release Into Public Domain)

I think that the greatest threat to the founding principles of the World Wide Web is to have an individual or company owning or controlling the World Wide Web.  I believe that having an individual owning the World Wide Web is the greatest threats because the individual can charge people for using the World Wide Web and basically monopolize it since there is only one World Wide Web.  This would contradict the principle of the World Wide Web.  In general, the World Wide Web is meant for the people and not for someone to take ownership.  Imagine if someone did control the internet, people might not be able to freely put out information and people would not have the control over what is on the internet. For example, the “Right to be forgotten” in Europe is an example of Google partially taking ownership of the internet. It allows google to take request to remove links and data off of their google search.  Google shouldn’t have the right to remove anything because it is removing facts and information from the public and the information might not be replaceable, since people wouldn’t know what have been removed so the information will be gone forever.  Why should google have to power to be able to remove certain information from the search engine? Without information created by journalists, bloggers, and your regular people, Google wouldn’t even be a thing.  So imagine if someone does take full control of the internet, the web would be completely different today.
