Curls, Kinks, & Coils
Shoutout to all of my natural hair beauties and those of you transitioning to be on the curl side.
My Natural Hair Journey Timeline
2012: “Big Chop”
After a summer of box braids, I woke up one morning and decided to do the big chop. I had about 6 inches of hair on my head, maybe. Do I regret my decision? No. Was it an adjustment? Yes. I cried for three days straight. I was definitely apart of the bald headed bitch movement, eventually PROUD.
Hair Type: 3c/4a , thick, & soft
2013: Little color & Heat
My hair was definitely growing so I decided to put some “spice” on it. Nothing like a little color and a fresh blow out. Can you say “feeling myself”? Hell yeah, you couldn’t tell me nothing! This was also the road to destruction. Stay tuned. There’s more.
2014: Length Check, Heavy on the Dye, Heavy on the Heat
At this point in my natural hair journey, my curls are popping and my length is everything I could have ever imagined. However, that just wasn’t enough for me. I needed more and by more I mean more heat, more color, more “spice”. I had really long hair and with curls there’s shrinkage. I felt as though no one could see my length so I continued to straighten my hair. Little did I know this was damaging my hair more and more. On top of the heat damage I was receiving, I wanted lighter hair, I dyed my hair approximately every two weeks to achieve the “blonde look”. Again, BAD IDEA.
2015: More Dye, More Heat, & Bleach
So finally, I am over playing in-home salon. I decide to take it to the “professionals”. Yes, my hair was suffering from heat damage, meaning my curls were becoming loser but not to the point where there was no curl pattern. Pay close attention, I say “professionals” for a reason. Just because you work in a salon doesn’t mean you are trained to deal with every hair type, especially one of those you are just simply not use to. However, instead of exploiting your professionalism and simply saying I don’t feel comfortable , I become a test dummy. I had my long, beautiful, curly, bouncy hair touched by a moron! I allowed these fools to bleach my hair blonde and straighten it and ended up becoming A BALD HEADED BITCH! My hair was choppy, stringy, and thin. When I tried to go back to my “curly” side, it no longer existed. Stay away from bleach people, especially those with “Grade A” hair.
2016: 2nd “Big Chop”
After months of disappointment and trying to recover my beautiful curls, I gave up. I chopped all of my hair off yet again, except this time I had a brush cut. As stated before, I was very disappointed but happy that my hair was in a healthy state again. Stay tuned. Updates coming soon.
Exploring Products
For the first chop I mostly used Tresemme leave-in conditioner and water. Looking back, my hair was extremely dry. Be sure to use some type of oil, with your wash-n-go’s; I prefer argan oil but coconut, castor, and any other will work as well.
Now, I use a variety of products. My current favorite: Aunt Jackie’s shampoo, detangler, and leave-in conditioner. I’ve also tried the Curls product line leave-in conditioner and liked it. Shea Moisture is also a great product line. Products are definitely based on preference. I look forward to trying more but right now, I’m stuck on Aunt Jackie’s.
