Honestly the more insidious aspect of D&D and other similar fantasy properties is not the appropriation, but the way they reinforce an eurocentric world view.

As you mentioned, creepy snake people have a real mesoamerican feel. Very often when white writers want to write an exotic locale or a scary populace they will throw in mesoamerican, african or asian signifiers as a shorthand.

You can see this even just in classes, right? If you look at illustrations for barbarians and druids in any PHB, you’re likely to see a lot of native american and african traits (and yes, Celtic traits as well, go talk to actual Irish people about how they’ve been historically treated in europe).

D&D Next’s PHB is a little better, but the fact of the matter is that these things are baked into the system. For example; what constitutes a religion in D&D? It’s this thing where there’s a god at the top and then a bunch of heavily armored crusader priests underneath. And what do these priests do? Faith-heal people. That is such a (admittedly shallow) christian take on religion that it leaves little space for anything else.

Anyway, just some thoughts on... clerics, I guess.

here’s a handy reference sheet to aid in character creation. i love that it includes the primary ability for each class, as well as a quick easy breakdown of backgrounds and the skills associated.

This is a little project I’ve been working on a for a while: The Knight Templar.

The basic idea came from this Sage Advice tweet from Mike Mearls, regarding how to pull off a spell-less Paladin. Much like the best version of the spell-less Ranger is with the Scout UA subclass (either for fighter or rogue), the best way to create a spell-less Pally would be as a fighter archetype, utilizing smites as the main feature.

I took a lot of queues from the Combat Superiority feature present in the Battle Master and a lot of early UA Fighter Archetypes, but I wanted to differentiate it enough that it would maintain it’s own identity. Rather than maneuvers, this archetype’s Conviction Dice are used to do one of three things: Smite, Heal, or activate a Paladin-like aura.

I think I’ve struck a nice balance between flavor, necessity, and balance. Let me know what you guys think, and if you have any suggestions, remember, making fun of me is a free action!

EP. 96 Gnome Problems

Look what we’ve got here, a brand new strip from you favorite infrequently posting DnD webcomic. This ones on me friends, Sam had it up and ready at the end of last week and I just totally bungled the entire ordeal. I gotta do better, I WILL do better. But as the old saying goes “bunglers gonna bungle”. Anybody else think the little guys nose is cute and fun? Nice me too. MOVING ON!!!

So turns out the Detective tripped over a little gnome guy who had concealed himself in the swamp for some reason. Who knows why but looks like the dude may be regretting that decision seeing as all it may have gotten him was a big old squished nose.
