On This Day In Royal History . 24 July 1689 . Prince William, Duke of Gloucester was born . . The future Queen Anne was married to Prince George of Denmark and Norway, & in their six years of marriage Anne had been pregnant six times, but none of her children had survived. At the end of her seventh pregnancy, at 5 a.m. on 24 July 1689, she was delivered of a son in Hampton Court Palace. As it was usual for the births of potential heirs to the throne to be attended by several witnesses, the King (William III) Queen (Mary II) and “most of the persons of quality about the court” were present. Three days later, the newborn baby was baptised William Henry after his uncle King William by Henry Compton, Bishop of London. . About Prince William; . ◼ Prince William, Duke of Gloucester, was the son of Princess Anne, later Queen from 1702, & her husband, Prince George, Duke of Cumberland. He was their only child to survive infancy. Styled Duke of Gloucester, he was viewed by contemporaries as a Protestant champion because his birth seemed to cement the Protestant succession established in the “Glorious Revolution” that had deposed his Catholic grandfather James II the previous year. . ◼ Gloucester’s mother was estranged from her brother-in-law & cousin, William III, & her sister, Mary II, but supported links between them & her son. He grew close to his uncle William, who created him a Knight of the Garter, & his aunt Mary, who frequently sent him presents. . ◼ Gloucester’s precarious health was a constant source of worry to his mother. His death, on 30 July 1700 at the age of eleven, precipitated a succession crisis as his mother was the only individual remaining in the Protestant line of succession established by the Bill of Rights 1689. On This Day In History . 24 July 1860 . Princess Charlotte of Prussia was born . . ◼ Princess Viktoria Elisabeth Auguste Charlotte was born on 24 July 1860 at the Neues Palais in Potsdam. She was the eldest daughter & second child of Prince Frederick of Prussia, a member of the House of Hohenzollern who became Crown Prince of Prussia in 1861 & German Emperor in 1888. Through her mother Victoria, Princess Royal, Charlotte was the eldest granddaughter of the British monarch Queen Victoria & her consort Prince Albert of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha. . ◼ Princess Charlotte of Prussia, was later Duchess Consort of Saxe-Meiningen as the wife of Bernhard III, the duchy's last ruler. . ◼ Princess Charlotte was a difficult child & indifferent student, with a nervous disposition. Her relationship with her demanding mother was strained. As she grew older, Charlotte developed a penchant for spreading gossip & causing trouble. Eager to escape from parental control, at age sixteen, she married Prince Bernhard of Saxe-Meiningen in 1878. Her husband's weak-willed personality had little effect on her. Known for spreading gossip & her eccentric personality, Princess Charlotte enjoyed Berlin society while frequently leaving her only child, Princess Feodora, in the care of family members. Charlotte & Feodora, in turn, also had a difficult relationship. . ◼ Charlotte's brother succeeded their father as Emperor Wilhelm II in 1888, increasing her social influence. Throughout her brother's reign, she was known for her mischief-making, & spent her life in between bouts of illness, in frivolous & extravagant pursuits. She became Duchess of Saxe-Meiningen in 1914, only for her husband to lose his title with the end of World War I in 1918. Charlotte died the following year of a heart attack in Baden-Baden. She had suffered from a lifetime of ill-health. James Stuart becomes King of Scotland as his mother Mary, Queen of Scots is forced to abdicate. . . ◼ James was the son of Mary, Queen of Scots, & a great-great-grandson of Henry VII, King of England, & Lord of Ireland (through both his parents), uniquely positioning him to eventually accede to all three thrones. . ◼ James succeeded to the Scottish throne at the age of thirteen months, after his mother Mary was compelled to abdicate in his favour. . ◼ Four different regents governed during his minority, which ended officially in 1578, though he did not gain full control of his government until 1583. . ◼  In 1603, he succeeded the last Tudor monarch of England, Elizabeth I, who died without issue. He continued to reign in all three kingdoms for 22 years, a period known as the Jacobean era after him, until his death in 1625 at the age of 58.
