On This Day In Royal History . 7 May 1625 . The Funeral of King James VI & I . . ◼ James’s funeral, a magnificent but disorderly affair, took place on 7 May. Bishop John Williams of Lincoln preached the sermon, observing, “King Solomon died in Peace, when he had lived about sixty years … and so you know did King James”. . ◼ James was buried in Westminster Abbey. The position of the tomb was lost for many years. In the 19th century, following an excavation of many of the vaults beneath the floor, the lead coffin was found in the Henry VII vault. . ◼ The king had died at Theobalds House on 27 March 1625 during a violent attack of dysentery. In early 1625, James had been plagued by severe attacks of arthritis, gout & fainting fits, & in March had fell seriously ill with tertian ague & then suffered a stroke. . 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 Born 19 June 1566, he was King of Scotland as James VI from 24 July 1567 & King of England & Ireland as James I from the union of the Scottish and English crowns on 24 March 1603 until his death in 1625. On This Day In History . 24 July 1567 . James Stuart becomes King of Scotland as his mother Mary, Queen of Scots is forced to abdicate. . . ◼ James was the son of Mary, Queen of Scots, & a great-great-grandson of Henry VII, King of England, & Lord of Ireland (through both his parents), uniquely positioning him to eventually accede to all three thrones. . ◼ James succeeded to the Scottish throne at the age of thirteen months, after his mother Mary was compelled to abdicate in his favour. . ◼ Four different regents governed during his minority, which ended officially in 1578, though he did not gain full control of his government until 1583. . ◼  In 1603, he succeeded the last Tudor monarch of England, Elizabeth I, who died without issue. He continued to reign in all three kingdoms for 22 years, a period known as the Jacobean era after him, until his death in 1625 at the age of 58. The Coronation of King James VI of Scotland . . ◼ James was annointed King of Scots at the age of thirteen months at the Church of the Holy Rude, Stirling, by Adam Bothwell, Bishop of Orkney, on 29 July 1567. . ◼ The sermon at the coronation was preached by John Knox. James VI and I (d. 27 March 1625) was King of Scotland as James VI from 24 July 1567 & King of England & Ireland as James I from the union of the Scottish and English crowns on 24 March 1603 until his death in 1625. . The kingdoms of Scotland & England were individual sovereign states, with their own parliaments, judiciaries, & laws, though both were ruled by James in personal union. . James was the son of Mary, Queen of Scots, & Henry Stuart, Lord Darnley, & also a great-great-grandson of Henry VII, King of England. James succeeded to the Scottish throne at the age of thirteen months, after his mother was forced to abdicate in his favour. 4 different regents governed during his minority. In 1603, he succeeded the last Tudor monarch of England, Elizabeth I, who died childless. He reigned in all three kingdoms for 22 years, a period known after him as the Jacobean era. After the Union of the Crowns, he based himself in England from 1603, & styled himself “King of Great Britain & Ireland”. He was a major advocate of a single parliament for England & Scotland. In his reign, the Plantation of Ulster & British colonisation of the Americas began. . At 57 years & 246 days, James’s reign in Scotland was the longest of any Scottish monarch. He achieved most of his aims in Scotland but faced great difficulties in England, including the Gunpowder Plot in 1605 & repeated conflicts with the English Parliament. James was a talented scholar, & the author of works such as Daemonologie (1597), The True Law of Free Monarchies (1598), & Basilikon Doron (1599). . He sponsored the translation of the Bible into English that would later be named after him: the Authorized King James Version. . Written by King James VI & I . . ◼ Tobacco was introduced into Europe from South America in the mid-16th century, and it is traditionally said that Sir Walter Raleigh promoted its use in England. . ◼ King James I, soon after his accession to the throne (24 March 1604), joined in the anti-smoking campaign with this vehement denunciation, to which he punningly refers as ‘the fume of an idle brain’. . ◼ In his peroration he calls tobacco-smoking a ‘custome lothsome to the eye, hatefull to the Nose, harmefull to the brains, daungerouse to the Lungs, and in the blacke stinking fume thereof, neerest resembling the horrible Stigian smoke of the pit that is bottomelesse’. . .
