The Harwick Branch Line had fallen into a sickening, absolute stillness.
Usually, the coastal air was alive with the rhythmic, sophisticated hum of Daisy carrying out her passenger duties, while Ryan managed the heavy goods traffic further down the line. But Ryan's whistle hadn't echoed past the bluffs in days. The passengers had vanished long before the tracks turned cold, leaving the northern line abandoned to a creeping, silent rot.
Inside the darkened carriage shed at Harwick, the true horror wasn't just what was happening to Daisy’s body—it was what was happening to her mind. She was drowning in a wave of terrifying, heavy **disorientation**.
A diesel railcar relies entirely on precision, logic, and order. But Daisy's thoughts had become a fractured, tangled mess of static. She was deeply, fundamentally confused, her sophisticated mechanical brain spinning in useless, frantic circles as she tried to make sense of the suffocating haze paralyzing her systems.
The vertigo of her fading consciousness was agonizing. She couldn't remember the morning schedule. She couldn't remember the faces of the passengers she took such pride in carrying. She couldn't even remember the last time her brilliant green layout had been properly polished. Everything that made her who she was—her elegance, her memories, her very identity—was slipping away into a void of pure cognitive chaos, replaced only by a blinding, white-hot agony radiating from deep beneath her floorboards.
The elegance she prided herself on was being systematically slaughtered from within by this psychological unravelling.
As her mind splintered, her body followed. With a succession of wet, metallic pops, the lower half of her sleek railcar body began to tear itself apart. Her undercarriage buckled and split open, the steel framing pushed aside like dead skin to reveal a grotesque, biological underbelly. An animal-like body pushed its way violently through the ruptured framework, dropping her elegant housing onto a nightmare of muscle and bone. Thick, heavy limbs sprouted from the torn metal, covered completely in a coarse, matted coat of fur.
The transformation was a brutal, bloody mess. Fresh, hot crimson fluid pumped out of her fractured seams, thoroughly soaking the grey fur and pooling heavily over her wheels until the rails glistened, but Daisy barely registered the physical mutilation. She was too lost in the terrifying fog of her own dissolving thoughts.
The sheer panic of her disorientation forced her faceplate to warp, her delicate features twisting into a horrific caricature. Her jaw unhinged with a sickening, heavy crack, splitting wide to expose a single row of freshly sprouted, razor-sharp teeth that glinted in the dim shed light, slicked with a mixture of black grease and blood.
She shook violently, her frame vibrating on her ruined suspension as her eyes mapped with thick, ruptured vessels. The confusion in her mind was entirely paralyzing. She was completely trapped in the psychological gray-zone between her fading mechanical consciousness and a feral, predatory instinct that she couldn't comprehend, leaving her entirely unable to process reality or call out for help. For a long, agonizing moment, she simply shuddered in the dark, her clawed paws tensing against the cold ground while her single row of sharp teeth clicked together in a rhythm of pure panic.
Then, the blinding haze in her mind cleared just a fraction.
The profound disorientation ebbed away for a single, fleeting second, allowing her rolling, bloodshot eyes to finally focus on her surroundings. She looked down at the blood-drenched fur matting her new legs, at the predatory limbs supporting her weight, and felt the sharp edges of the teeth lining her unhinged mouth.
A heavy, shuddering breath escaped her jaw. With a trembling, barely audible whisper that cut through the silent tomb of the shed, she spoke to the empty dark:
"...w...h...a...t...?"
