Ciao! I was wondering something: I’ve seen the word “dai” also written as “daje” many times, mostly from people from Rome, I’ve seen other words with j instead too, but can’t remember which ones... So anyway, I was wondering, is this type of spelling more used in some regioni in general or just Rome?
Ciao! “Daje” is the roman way to say “dai”, as you know, and nowadays is known and used throughout Italy as a way to encourage people. There also some hashtags on different social networks, if you want to take a look.Coming back to the words you don’t remember, I guess you might have read something in some songs’ lyrics: I’m thinking about the song by Ultimo we translated few weeks ago, for example, in which there were a few.Anyway, this happens because in the regional/Roma area’s idiom, the pronunciation of the group of letters [gl/gli] sounds as [j/ji]: meglio (=better) sounds like “mejo/mejio” (you can listen to that song to check it out). To be honest this isn’t something that happens only there: also other regional idioms use the letter [j], and most of the times instead of the group of letters [gl] as well, again because of the way they sound. In my hometown’s idiom, for example, we use “méj“ for “meglio” and “famèj” for “famiglio” (“stalliere” = horse keeper). So basically, it happens in many different regioni, not just in Roma.
And to respond to your last question, Roma (and obv. Lazio’s regione) is in Centro Italia, together with Toscana, Marche and Umbria. Some put Abruzzo in Italy’s Center too, but that is not what the Istat/Eurostat (statistics institutes) definition says. Look here:
Hope it helped! Buona serata!
