Lady Gaga Hits The Studio With Rihanna, Luke Bryan Collaborators | Idolator

Lady Gaga hit the studio last night (January 13) with two new-to-her-collaborators. Brian Kennedy (above, right) produced Rihanna's "Disturbia" and Chris Brown's "Forever," while Dallas Davidson (left) is country superstar Luke Bryan's go-to collaborator. "First session of the year with @ladygaga & @dallasdavidson_ two incredible people! #inspired #readytoworkagain #newsound" Brian says on Instagram. Could Lady Gaga be working on a new solo album? Somehow that seems unlikely — after all, she only released Joanne last year. Meanwhile, Little Monsters wonder whether this session was for A Star Is Born, which is being directed by Bradley Cooper while starring Gaga herself. See the studio update below. If Heaven Wasn't So Far Away

Look. I get that the subjunctive isn't easy to grasp. Heaven knows that, when my adult students at the Centre Sociale in France asked me what I found most frustrating about French, I replied quickly, "The SUBJUNCTIVE!" And they laughed and said no one really uses it anyways. 

In America, it's even worse. I don't think I was ever actually taught the subjunctive mood. But that's no excuse, really. It's one of those things that just sounds better. 

"If I were a rich man, dah dah dah dah dah dah dah dah dah dah dah!" (Were there enough dahs in that?)

"If it please the court..."

"Truth be told..."

"I wish it were summer."

Those are all examples of the subjunctive. Another one? "If heaven weren't so far away, I'd go there more often."

And yet here we are, with this song. "If Heaven Wasn't So Far Away" is sung by Justin Moore and was written by Dallas Davidson, Rob Hatch and Brett Jones. It was originally recorded by Rhett Akins (remember him? "Gimme That Girl" writer?) but didn't chart when he released it. 

Anyways, there's not much of a need to go into the lyrics, because the problem is glaring at us right there, right in the title of the song. Obviously, this sentence needs the subjunctive. Do you know what's worse? The meter would be better with "were." "Wasn't" is clipped into "wadnt" but honestly, "weren't" fits much better into a single syllable. 

So, country songwriters, take note: another example of when proper English actually makes your song BETTER.

Gimme That Girl

Oh Joe Nichols. Or rather, oh Benjamin Hayslip, Dallas Davidson (wow there's another career out there for him, huh?!) and Rhett Akins. What a song. You like this girl when her hair's a mess, when she's sleepy and puts her head on your chest. It's all sweet(ish?) and lovey and all...until you get to this line: 

Gimme a girl that's beautiful

without a trace of makeup on

A girl THAT'S beautiful? Oh no. Oh no, no, no. You see, when we refer to people, we use "WHO." Gimme a girl WHO is beautiful. What Messrs Hayslip, Davidson, and Akins have done is to make this poor woman into an object. They've stripped her of her personhood. And while I might could (see my double modal? That's how you know I'm country) imagine that they're simply ignorant of this particular grammar rule, these men write for a living. And I simply won't excuse it. 

I brought this issue up with a friend of mine who happens to know Mr. Akins quite well. My friend insists that it's not misogyny, but it's still lazy and inexcusable.
