Cruella(2021)

So this is what I predicted from watching the trailer and writing about it in an earlier post...

The music in the trailer is impressive. It honestly seems like a documentary about Cruella. The trailer did a good job at showing her journey. I wonder if this movie going to be like Maleficent were the audience roots for the evil queen in the end. It seems like that from the sneak peek trailer. I wonder if the movie is going to begin when Cruella is younger so the audience gets a better understanding of how she becomes evil. Emma Stone does a good job portraying her in the trailer and I am excited to see what the movie looks like in May.

Literally everything I predicted came true

Plot Points

Multiple Personality disorder

It just seems to me that there are two sides to Cruella. Estella, the "good side" and Cruella the "bad side." While watching the movie my husband turned to me and was like "it's like she has a personality disorder." It is literally like Cruella has two personalities or personas. In the movie, Estella's mother says "to be good" and "to not be Cruella today." She hands Estella a hat to cover her black and white hair symbolizing Estella hiding and covering up "the bad side" of herself. But this usually backfires as Estella ends up showing her bad side of herself more than the good. When Estella grows up, she dyes her hair dark maroon symbolizing that she is again trying to cover that side of herself. When she finds out that the woman who she looks up to kills her mother, she wants revenge and her Cruella side comes out and stays. Cruella could not hide herself and when she finds out a shocking revelation about her mother, she realizes that the bad side was inherently going to stay. Cruella kills the good persona, metaphorically taking off another skin and showing the layers underneath which can be pretty cruel.

Crazy Dalmations

Okay so I have never seen a dalmation act out in a crazy and psychotic way then I have while watching this movie. It's like they had to make the dogs crazy for Cruella to hate them. Even though we are made to believe Cruella did cruel things to these dogs.We see Cruella treating other dogs with respect throughout the whole movie which contradicts her behaivor towards animals in the other Dalmation films.

It is all about mom

Cruella's backstory centers around her relationship with her mom. It is her guilt that leads her to try to be a slightly bit better of a person but once that guilt is taken away all hell breaks loose. Once Cruella finds a shocking discovery, it does not make a dent on her character except to say that she was born to be bad.

The fashion

In conclusion

I enjoyed the fashion and the backstory of Cruella was interesting. I can see some inconsistencies between this move and the other Dalmation's movies especially regarding Cruella's hate for dogs. They had to make a even more hated character than Cruella so we are made to root for her even though she is far from good from stealing and lying to get what she wants out of life. She makes a good villian but her hate for dogs needs to be more evident because that is what Cruella is known for besides fashion.
