Have officially began the ceremonial spiking of all my beverages because my family is driving me bonkers
5/31/19.
The joyful raw guitar tone got me right away. Not very well equipped to write about Damily, so I did a little reading...
Giddy guitar playing, galloping dance rhythms, exuberant cries and a generally joyous atmosphere — nothing about tsapiky music would tell you that it's mostly played at traditional ceremonies, especially funerals. For the denizens of the coastal city of Tulear in southern Madagascar, however, the association between the vibrant guitar-band music and ceremonies of death — as well as many other ceremonies — is everyday, as is the music's place in their lives... Tsapiky, a fusion of South African pop music and local Madagascar traditions, is a young style that began in the 1970s. It's not limited to any one ethnic tradition, which means everyone can feel connected to it.
Damily have resided in France for the last couple decades. This album came out in 2017 on the Swiss label Bongo Joe.
Early Years: Madagascar Cassette Archives
In the last decade, we've taken to frequent trips to live with family in Irvine.
Of course we have our spring family campout that go back a ways. And then sometimes something around Thanksgiving or Christmas (ish).
Coordinating the care of Kimmer's aunt and uncle is what caused the number of visits to peak. Especially for Kimmer who, at some point, went down every month. We've backed off from that a little but, so long as we're welcome, we're inclined to continue the tradition.
The tradition?
Yeah. Of living this other life with our family and friends in California. If we could, we'd try to do the same thing with family and friends in Holland.
And it is living there. Irvine, for sure. It's a domestic experience but with more sun, no cats, and work scaled way waaaaaaay back. There are more consistent, personal moments that are indellible because they're tales from the road. Stories from our continued adventures.
It's definitely more peaceful.
It's definitely more relaxing.
There's definitely more time to consider our lives back home from afar (which is a super helpful experience we're afforded).
So far, 2025, we straddled New Year's Eve and Day in Irvine. Coming up on three weeks later we straddled Linzy's Little Lies gig in Los Angeles.
Spring looks to be our next return visit. After talking with her uncle at the L.A. gig Friday night, Linzy might also be able to make an appearance, get our band back together.
So Spring is what's on the books. Still, we are clearly able to conjure one of our usual visits from thin air and on short notice. So we might be back before Spring.
You never know.
Seriously. You never know. We.
Never know.
Plus our family in Holland remains on our radar as does the Harry Potter studio tour south of London.
Two birds, one stone?
Maybe. Maybe.
We definitely have family over there who are serious fans. So you never know. We really.
Never know.
What I do know is that we thoroughly enjoy these alternative stretches of life in our lives. This thing where we're just living.
Somewhere else.
With people we dearly love.
Who live far, far away.
