Danai Akinyemi

1) Her first name is Zimbabwean and means “to love one another.” Her father named her that. Her last name is one of her middle names, but it’s what she started going by after she was disowned. It means “destined to be a warrior.” It’s a Yoruba (people group from Nigeria) name traditionally given to guys, but her mother sensed something about her. She was right, even after losing an eye, she never stops fighting. All together (including her real last name), her name reads “having a heart to love and fight.”

2) The reason she was disowned was because of her becoming a soldier during the Great War. She was naive, believing that she would do good by helping the “great” country that helped them when they moved there. Her siblings knew better - they knew what their government and soldiers did in the name of “progress,” but Danai wouldn’t listen. She wish she had. The horrors she witnessed and atrocities she committed stay with her always.

3) Her eyes go through a lot. She enters the war with perfect 20/20 vision and leaves it half blind on account of shrapnel from an explosion. It tore through the left side of her face, damaging her eye beyond repair. Well, beyond what the military wanted to do about it anyway. They gave her the cheaper option which were perception enchantments for the rest of her senses. Her other eye’s vision gets damaged temporarily after cryo stasis. It heals almost completely and she gets around like before. She doesn’t mind being down an eye and likes that she can’t forget what she did in the war - a constant reminder to do better. She is understandably upset when her eye is fixed without her consent in the institute…

4) She was actually really scared of ghouls for awhile. She was able to keep a straight face when talking with them, but she would always leave as soon as possible. She doesn’t get over the fear until she gets to Goodneighbor. Proximity over time with the numerous ghoul residents mixed with Hancock’s charm and maybe ghouls aren’t so scary after all…

5) To the average waster, she is obsessed with hygiene. She hoards any soap, hair products, toothpaste, toothbrushes, and cleaning supplies that she comes across. She retwists her own locs and comes up with creative solutions to detox/clean them. She even sets into motion hygiene practices within the Minutemen - both the soldiers and the settlements.
