I made a thing. It’s a dance-y thing.

Hello, Tumblr! You may remember from my last video that I’d been stressed out by the pressure I’ve put on myself to put out “quality” videos. My solution to this problem was to step back from the complex and start making simple, fun videos again until I was in a good place to level up.
In thinking about what to do for this week’s video, my first thought was to do a dance recess, because it would be silly and fun and totally freeform - a welcome break from the intensity of the preproduction process, from scripting to lighting to gathering all the graphics I’d insert in the edit.
Then I found myself at a crafts store, walking past the yards of fabrics and thinking, “Wouldn’t it be cool to make your own green screen?”
Fifteen dollars and twelve square yards of green fabric later, I found myself racing home, my mind buzzing with ideas on how to use a green screen to make a dance recess video.
What was supposed to be a video made on the fly turned into a 12-hour project. As I write this, I’m running on an hour of sleep because I was waist deep in special effects and too excited to tear myself away from it.
I failed to take it easy with this video, but I’m okay with that because something good came out of it: I learned that I still have the passion to make videos.
Last time I’d voiced my concern with my seemingly waning desire to make videos. The demand to be consistently creative was starting to weigh me down, I felt like I was scraping at the bottom of the creativity barrel, and the fear of not putting out enough “quality” content all contributed to serious doubts about my passion, and I struggled to make anything for weeks.
With this dance recess video, there was no pressure to “be good,” and that knowledge liberated me from the prison of self-doubt I’d enclosed myself in. It was like the floodgates to the River of Creativity opened, and I found myself swimming in ideas, the current washing over me with idea after idea: Green screen! iPod commercials! Song mashup!
A month ago I would have been exhausted at the idea of a video this complex, but now I was giddy with excitement at the prospect of fashioning my own green screen and researching tutorials on special effects. I remember feeling this way, long before school, long before the Adobe Creative Cloud, long before anyone knew I was making videos: that child-like joy of making something just for you.
It’s an incredible relief to know that the passion is still there.
Anyway, these are some thoughts I had while making this video. I hope you enjoy it (and if you don’t, that’s okay, too). Have a baller weekend, Tumblr. x
P.S. It’s quite possible that this is some of the cheesiest stuff I’ve written. (I’m running on an hour of sleep, so I’m not fit to judge what’s considered “good writing.”)
