“Ok so after your practice what do you say we go out for drinks? To celebrate that latest breakthrough?” I asked, shuffling papers around as I tried to make sense of the mess we’d created. “Danny?” I looked up to see Daniel staring at me.

“are you asking me on a date?” He asked, eyes narrowing at me as he tried to work through my question.

“No.” I said, my face heating up as I furrowed my eyebrows at him. “It’s just drinks. Friends get drinks. Coworkers get drinks. Especially to celebrate.” Daniel studied me carefully.

“Because it sounded like you were asking me on a date.” He said, eyebrows raising as he started helping sort papers. “I have been asked out on dates before and that’s what it sounded like.” I rolled my eyes at him.

“I didn’t ask you out Danny.” I sighed. Daniel shrugged.

“alright. If that’s what you say.” He handed me a stack of papers. “Then yeah let’s go for drinks tomorrow after practice.” I shook my head as he headed for the door. "It ends at 5 so might as well get dinner too."

"Ok now you're milking it." I accused. Daniel chuckled as he crossed his arms.

"Not at all." I narrowed my eyes at him. "I'll see you tomorrow (Y/N). The usual place." I nodded as he left my apartment. The next day, I packed everything up and put it in my car before driving to the officer's club. I saw Jack leaving as I walked in. Knowing he had probably gotten into it with Daniel, I pretended like I hadn't seen him and kept walking to the corner booth that we always got after a game. "You see Jack?" Daniel asked, running his finger over the edge of his glass.

"Yeah." I said, motioning for a beer from the bar. "Didn't say anything though. He say something to you?"

"Just the usual I should drop the case crap." Daniel muttered. "Doesn't matter. Because it isn't gonna happen." I nodded as my beer was put down in front of me. "To winning this and proving his ass wrong." I tapped my glass against his and took a drink.

"So..." I looked around the bar as Daniel watched me. "How did practice go?"

"You know we should like an old married couple." He cut in. I looked at him in surprise. "We ask about each other's day. We argue about stupid shit. We know almost everything about each other. Old married couple."

"Are not." I muttered as I took another drink.

"You still don't want to admit this is a date." He laughed. I frowned at him.

"Because it is not." I shot back. Daniel nodded. "Danny quite it. It isn't funny anymore."

"Oh come on (Y/N)." He teased. "I see the way you look at me. And Sam's seen the way I look at you." He shrugged. "Why should we avoid the obvious? We were practically dating anyway." I felt my face heat up at his words. "Unless..." Daniel looked at me seriously for a moment. "Did I just royally fuck up?" I tilted my glass and watched the way the beer moved. "Its alright if you call me out. I can take it."

"You didn't." I murmured, finally looking at him again. Daniel nodded, a small smile making its way onto his face.

"Alright then." He said, raising his glass. "To the first date of many." I nodded as I tapped my glass against his.
