Errormare AU #2: Royal Betrothal

Second AU from the poll!

Once again, as the title suggests, this is a historical AU in which Error and Nightmare are in an arranged marriage. It's set in the late 1700s, approximately 1780s.

Nightmare's the Emperor of his empire (which I don't have a name for yet). Most outside of where he rules see him as a brutal warmonger due to expansion that occurred right after he took the throne, but that just isn't true. He's not a very good fighter at all - but he is a brilliant negotiator and legislator.

Error, meanwhile, is the second-born prince of his home kingdom (which I also don't have a name for). Because of this, he was raised for a "feminine" role, as is traditional in noble society (in this AU - explained later). He has mixed feelings on this - he likes the clothes and some of the "acceptable" hobbies, such as sewing, but he absolutely dreads marriage and what would be expected of him when it happens (a big contributing factor being his haphephobia).

Unsurprisingly, he's not particularly happy about Geno (his older brother, and King) marrying him off, especially not to somebody he believes might hurt him.

In this universe, because skeletons are monoecious (have both male and female sex organs - and yes, I know this word is usually used for plants or invertebrates), they don't neatly fit into traditional gender roles, which is particularly troubling for noble and royal society, where marriage is an important social tool. So, it became tradition to switch between "male" and "female" socialisation every second generation, in order to have a mix of heirs/other governmental positions, and offspring that could be married off to maintain connections. However, all offspring are still referred to with masculine pronouns unless they choose otherwise, since that was considered the default then, and they aren't technically male or female.

In the case of the CQ brothers, Geno was born first, so he was raised "male" to be the heir; Error was born second, meaning he was raised "female" to be married off; and Fresh was born third, making him also raised "male", for other governmental position and as another heir if something happens to Geno (likely, given his poor health). Currently Fresh is an army general.

(I totally did not invent this complex social structure purely so I could have them be gay but also put Error in a dress, shut up /j)

The main (and very obvious) inspiration for this AU was actually this fic that I read years ago (and hasn't updated since 2021. RIP). My love of history and historical dress is also a factor, which might be apparent given that 3/4 AUs on the poll are historical.

(I also definitely didn't spend hours looking into clothing from various decades to find the one I liked the aesthetic of best but that also still had stays in use because I love stays, and I also definitely am not super tempted to draw Error getting dressed into every layer that goes into his clothing because historical undergarments are super fucking cool. Shhhh.)

I beg the like 30 people who like Errormare to start calling it DarkChocolate because... Well... I thought its a cool ship name :(

Errormare and Nighterror are still so super epic ship names for the pair but DarkChocolate fits them so much better. Dark is Nightmare since he is a little emo boy and Chocolate is for Error because of his love for chocolate.
