This day in Environmental History – On October 7, 1959 the former Soviet Union’s Luna 3 spacecraft took the first ever picture of the far side or 'dark side' of the Moon. The picture was a low resolution photo but it marked the first time in history that humans were able to view the dark side of the Moon. The dark side of the Moon cannot be directly seen from Earth because gravitational tidal forces have affected the Moon’s rotation in such a way that the same part always faces Earth.
