Darren sets Ivy sidesaddle on his old but steady mare just before high noon as they ride toward the Trading Post. Ivy’s cheerfulness is warm against the slightest chill from the changing seasons; she clings lightly to Darren’s vest, humming a tune she picked up at the last barn dance. Darren feels a mix of pride and disbelief; after years of loneliness, he finally has the comfort of another presence at his side.
At the Trading Post, Darren purchases enough iron ingots from Brandon Lillard to keep the forge running for a while, while Ivy selects a new wool cloak for winter. They return home by midday, Darren heading straight to his workbench to finish a few wooden components while Ivy lingers nearby, listening to the quiet rhythm of his tools.
As the afternoon fades, Ivy taps his shoulder with a playful insistence. “Darren Dreamer, if you keep working, we’ll be the last souls to arrive at the barn dance,” she says.
Darren chuckles, brushing sawdust from his sleeves as he lets her pull him toward the door. He has big plans for that night, and as they make their way toward the first notes of distant fiddle-music drifting across the evening air, his heart thumps louder than the sound of cowboy boots doing the slap-dance.
