A medieval bell in St. Laurentius church in Dassel. A fathomless seaside mire not far from Dassel is called the Bedessian or Bessoic. There lies a beautiful and melodious bell that the incarnate devil has brought from the church to Portenhagen. The bell was made of pure gold. But the evil enemy did not steal it for its purity, its beauty or enchanting sound. He took it away out of envy wanting to ensure that the bell could not be used while worshiping God. A diver offered to go under the mire and tie the bell with ropes. The people above the ground should pull it with faith. Once out on the ground, people could resume the church service using the bell. But after a long time, he came out of the water empty handed, overwhelmed by the sight of something awful. He said that there was a green meadow in the depth of the mire, in the middle of which, the bell was kept on a table. A black dog lying beside the table prevented anyone from touching it. A horrifying merwoman was seen next to these screaming terribly, “It’s too early to pull this bell from here. No! You cannot do that!” An eighty-year-old man narrated the story of this Devil's Dip. On one of the Saturdays, when it was already time for vesper, a farmer from Leuthorst went close to the mire while plowing. Not only he continued with work, he forced both horses and farmhand boys to work by cursing and punching. Suddenly a large black and strong horse appeared on the land rising from the water. The faithless wild farmer caught him and dragged him to his horses in the devil's name. His sole intension was to ensure that none could leave work for the day until the fields around were plowed. The boys began crying as they to go home, but the farmer hit them hard. Right at that moment, the black horse vigorously pulled the poor emaciated horses along with the plough, the young boys and the unruly farmer deep into the Devil's Dip called Teufelsbad.
