//So, I'm going to a con this Sunday, and you could purchase the tickets online. I don't know how I managed to do this without my card getting flagged, but I put my name down as "Data Soong" instead of my legal name. XD
I am going to be very happy when they call me up in full cosplay and I get to see the looks on their faces.
I had lots of fun at Fan Expo Chicago last weekend! Unfortunately, Brent was not feeling well and wasn't able to attend, so I wasn't able to meet him again or get my Lore fan art signed. But despite the massive disappointment, I was still able to go and have a good time. I even met a Lal cosplayer!
As Halloween approaches, I thought it would be fun to post a tutorial of my Data cosplay (which I got to wear to QuadCon this weekend). The whole costume takes me about an hour and fifteen minutes to put on completely. So read on to learn how I transform myself into a Soong Type Android!
This is non-android human me for a base of reference.
The first step is giving myself those signature golden eyes!
I use the Intense Yellow contact lenses from Honeycolor, and I’ve been really pleased with them. When they first go in, I can feel them in my eyes slightly and see a yellow haze around the edge of my vision, but once they’ve been in for five minutes or so, I barely notice that they’re there.
Next up, I prep my hair for the wig. I brush it out then completely wet down the top, using a combination of comb and my hands to slick it down as flat as I can. Then I tie it back in a tight ponytail at the base of my neck.
At this point, I toss on my binder from GC2B, and now on to the part that takes the longest: the make-up! I start with a primer, which I spread all over my face and neck. The first couple times I did this cosplay, I didn’t use primer, and it is so much easier with the primer. The rest of the makeup spreads on much more smoothly and looks more even.
Then I set in on turning my skin that android alabaster!
It takes me about twenty minutes to get a nice even, smooth layer that completely covers my face and neck. The ears are the trickiest...and the part that I tend to find white makeup on and in the day after.
Ah, my Soong Type self is starting to emerge!
Next, I set the make-up with setting powder.
Contouring up next to give my face a little more shape! I use the light grey contour powder which I have found is what works best with Data’s nonhuman skin tone.
I use the contour along my jaw and under my chin. Instead of following my own jawline perfectly, I give myself the illusion of a squarer, more masculine-looking jaw. I then blend it into the white make-up.
Next up, white lips!
After that is my personal favorite part of the make-up process - giving myself Data’s golden glitter. I use Queen’s gold Stardust Cosmetic Powder which I apply over my lips and over my eyes.
My android skin is complete. Now onto my wig!
Now, you can’t tell from the pictures, but I can sit on my hair. Thus, the process of getting it up into a Data’s hair length wig is tricky.
First I put on two nude wig caps and begin the process of slowing feeding up hair up into it, making sure to distribute it as evenly as I can around the back of my head.
I also have a wig grip headband that I use. Helps keep the wig from slipping and also presses my real hair down even flatter.
And now it’s time for the wig itself!
Oh dear, even androids have bad hair days.
Ah, much better. I wet the wig down with water and apply Brandywine Wig Mousse, then mostly use my hands to comb it back into place and flatten and smooth it down to android perfection, and I finish it off with a good dousing of Brandywine Wig Hairspray to keep it in place.
Now to add those signature Starfleet sideburns!
I simply paint them on, using acrylic paint and a Qtip. I paint over the exposed bit of hair above my ear to blend it in.
Almost done! Time to get Data into uniform.
I use plain black dress pants for the bottom of the uniform, along with black socks and dress shoes, with a uniform jacket and pip set that I bought.
Now clip on my commbadge
and grab my holster and Type 2 phaser...and Commander Data is ready for his away mission!
Thanks for joining me for my Data cosplay tutorial!
