Leading Microsoft .NET Platform Development company
The Microsoft .NET Framework (pronounced dot net) is a software framework developed by Microsoft that runs primarily on Microsoft Windows. It includes a large class library known as Framework Class Library (FCL) and provides language interoperability (each language can use code written in other languages) across several programming languages. Programs written for .NET Framework execute in a software environment (as contrasted to hardware environment), known as Common Language Runtime (CLR), an application virtual machine that provides services such as security, memory management, and exception handling. FCL and CLR together constitute .NET Framework.
FCL provides user interface, data access, database connectivity, cryptography, web application development, numeric algorithms, and network communications. Programmers produce software by combining their own source code with .NET Framework and other libraries. .NET Framework is intended to be used by most new applications created for Windows platform. Microsoft also produces an integrated development environment largely for .NET software called Visual Studio.

Selling PHP
By Felipe Lodi
The history of PHP tells that it succeeds another product called PHP/FI. Even though I have been developing using PHP for a long time I have to say that I haven’t heard about that. Rasmus Lerdorf created that language in 1995 as a group of Perl scripts to track his Resume accesses, meaning by PHP, Personal Home Page Tools. As more complex functionality was needed, Rasmus improved that first code using C and then deployed to the world so anybody would be able to use and improve as they wish.
The second version release by 1997 had already several users contributing to the growth of the language. The third version was resembled and authored by two different guys (joined later by Rasmus) right after the second release in 1997. Andi Gutmans and Zeev Suraski were the new authors and they rewrote PHP because they thought PHP/FI 2.0 was “severely underpowered for developing an eCommerce application”. (The PHP Group, 2011)
Later on, PHP had new versions that always improved its core and it is present nowadays in many domains on the Internet given its flexibility, modularity, efficiency, strengthens and reliability. However, the latter is subjected to the user’s liability given that PHP is an Open Source language, therefore it is observed lack of supporting and language documentation is still in progress.
Within this documentation, there are lots about SQL Injection concern. “SQL Injection is subset of the unverified/unsanitized user input vulnerability”. (Friedl, 2007) Actually, HTML fields used by PHP forms can be used by threats to input SQL commands trying to breach the system. Even though the intended intruder will probably use some more sophisticated techniques, SQL Injection is the first thing to protect PHP applications from as this is widely used.
SQL Injection is not a particular issue of PHP however. Asp.Net applications are also liable to that and the Microsoft Patterns and Practices Website has interesting tips to protect Asp.Net applications that are also useful to PHP, Java or any other language used in Websites development.
The TIME Magazine brings a research of the 25 best eCommerce Websites. They do not state the languages they were developed with and further research in this sense did not bring me any satisfactory results. Nevertheless we can easily observe the trend on shopping online in different ways, in different sections and for different things. The first overall is the Amazon.Com followed by Dell and IQVC. (TIME, n.d.)
Following the online shopping trend as well as the strong points of PHP (being one of these, its free usage), we can notice a number of eCommerce products made in PHP (they are not free though). These products usually are fully customizable by the downloader. The advanced user only have to understand a little of PHP in order to leverage a whole new shopping system.
Amongst them are PHPCart (www.phpcart.net), COMDEV (www.comdevweb.com) and PHP Web Commerce (www.phpwebcommerce.com). I haven’t tested them myself but very good reviews can be found for those. These initiatives indeed make PHP as preferred platform for eCommerce businesses on the Web.

Business Intelligence on the Cloud
By Felipe Lodi
Data Warehousing is the practice of merging data from different sources of data into one centralized repository of data. There are no limits of databases sources in order to create the Data Warehousing as long as achieved just one database in the end. Infrastructure though not discussed in this paper, it is a concern indeed, as the biggest the Data Warehousing, the biggest the volumes and power processing. (White, 2011)
As the expected result is the centralized and homogeneous databases, using analysis, reporting and queries it is easier to work with the data, regardless of those several sources and the process used to merge them before. The main goal of companies using this type of tool is strategic planning and trending analysis, since understanding their data either in a daily basis timescale or on long periods of time, they expect to improve their forecasts and projections.
Also known as Business Intelligence, the centralized database used by decision makers and the enterprise is going to the cloud. Going to The Cloud in my simplest explanation is the practice of deploying services on the Web in a shared way. The same services that once were on corporative datacenters remotely accessed by the aimed staff are on the Web now in a shared though restricted way.
First thing comes to my mind is how safe is that data on the Web. The high level of exposure is not compatible with the importance of this data for the enterprise. Corporative information, strategic plans and industrial secrets are usually all there on the Data Warehouse and exposing that data on the Cloud is a huge risk to companies using that practice. In another hand the low costs on keeping the Data Warehousing on the Web seems to be an attractive to these corporations therefore there is an outstanding evaluation of pros and cons that this text will try to establish.
Considering the positive aspects of having the Business Intelligence on the Cloud, an excellent point Omer Trajman brings in his article for the Information Management Website. He also agrees that the Cloud is a “natural platform for the future of Data Warehousing” as the costs are lower (pay-as-you-go scheme) when deploying that data on the Web in comparison with budget constraints that traditional datacenters brings. (Trajman, 2009)
Scalability is another key-point since large volumes of data, storage and processing power are dealt by Business Intelligence. Such scalability, however, could also be achieved in those over headed former datacenters despite of the whole intrinsic planning, budgeting, configuring, testing and so on. Definitely scalability on the Cloud can be made with a single e-mail to the services vendor.
Besides security, which is still due to be discussed within this document, another point that is important to mention is the reliability on the service vendors. By putting their important data on the Web and by paying third party companies to store their data, corporations expect to have high availability on their databases. Although generally Data Warehouses are read only databases (MSDN, 2011), whole departments may be depending on this information in order to perform their tasks.
But the biggest concern is the sensitivity of the data presented on Data Warehouses. It is also true that many big companies, because of this sensitivity, decide by building their own Cloud structure by spreading online datacenters for all over the world rather than even relying on mature companies offering Cloud services such as Microsoft, Google and Amazon.
And finally, security wise, given the data movement, importing and exporting from different sources when feeding the databases, numerous opportunities for security breaches can happen. Oracle Database products for instance claims that security patches are improved on every new release however “How do you know who is accessing your most sensitive data and more importantly how do you know where it is being moved to?” (Laker, 2010)
The author of this interesting article states to do not put sensitive data on the Cloud. After all this discussion of the benefits of having the data on the Web, these are the controversies. Keith Laker from Oracle explains that most of the data being transferred from one engine to another are not encrypted and therefore not secure. However, he also claims that Oracle has an integrated solution for Data Warehousing on the Cloud that locks down sensitive data, in a certain way, providing the expected security. (Laker, 2010)
As a conclusion, still stands the comparison of costs between the Cloud and datacenters, threats on the Web against the safeness of locked datacenters (though sometimes accessible from outside) and finally whether or not to trust on Cloud service vendors. Which one to choose from? It is always a corporate’s choice that changes the nature of their business.
