Here’s a picture from last night’s date night with @queenbee_reigns to see “The Lion in Winter” performed at @bctstage and it was such a fun performance. I believe this upcoming weekend is the last chance to see the show, and if you like treachery and comedy, this would hopefully be a fun time. The play is about King Henry II of England and his dysfunctional family, where who will be the king (or queen) is up in the air in the Christmas of 1183. While I won’t spoil anything, or talk about the play directly (I’ll do that in another post when I read the play itself separately), this production was a joy. The team did a great job with the setting. I loved the old castle aesthetic they went for and the detail they took with making it look like an old ruin was great. I especially loved the detail of the bed and the bottles and goblets. The costumes were great too. The queen’s costumes were especially wonderful and added to that air of dazzling royalty and fierce power she portrayed. The hair and makeup was also really great. I only knew that wigs were used because the program told me so, and John’s pimples were such a wonderful touch to a delightful performance of the youngest son. The lighting team was great too. I loved how it shifted at dramatic moments, and they had some great cues too! Like how a character would mime the opening of a window and the lights would change to show it, or how, as my wife pointed out to me, at one point the lights created the sense of bars when in the dungeon scene. So cool and creative. And of course, I want to give the actors their due. They were all fun to watch and each brought uniqueness to their characters, from the loud and boisterous King Henry II who commands the stage as his court to the stiff and hostile King Philip of France who knows he is in adversarial territory.
