Dave Itzkoff: You’ve been telling audiences for years that racism isn’t going away and remains a potent force in America. Do you feel like you’ve seen circumstances improve at all?

Chris Rock: It’s real. It’s not going away. I said this before, but Obama becoming the president, it’s progress for white people. It’s not progress for Black people. It’s the Jackie Robinson thing. It’s written like he broke a barrier, as if there weren’t Black people that could play before him. And that’s how white people have learned about racism. They think, when these people work hard enough, they’ll be like Jackie. And the real narrative should be that these people, the Black people, are being abused by a group of people that are mentally handicapped. And we’re trying to get them past their mental handicaps to see that all people are equal.

Humanity isn’t progress — it’s only progress for the person that’s taking your humanity. If a woman’s in an abusive relationship and her husband stops beating her, you wouldn’t say she’s made progress, right? But that’s what we do with Black people. We’re constantly told that we’re making progress. The relationship we’re in — the arranged marriage that we’re in — it’s that we’re getting beat less.

The Class Clowns of ‘Booksmart’: Beanie Feldstein and Kaitlyn Dever

The stars of the coming-of-age comedy compare the film to their real-life high school experiences and explain how they became friends during the shoot.

Had you met each other before “Booksmart”?

DEVER We were always ships in the night.

FELDSTEIN I saw Kaitlyn at the Toronto Film Festival. She was in pink, and she walked out, and I was like, [gasps]. “Wait — oh — but ——. ” When Olivia told me she wanted me to be Molly, I was like, is Kaitlyn still playing Amy? I couldn’t believe it. Because Kaitlyn’s performance in “Short Term 12” will go down —

DEVER [mortified] Oh my God.

FELDSTEIN — as one of the best cinematic performances —

DEVER She brings this up all the time.

FELDSTEIN — of all time. I was such a fan of hers.

DEVER We met for the first time at a lunch with Olivia, at the Chateau [Marmont] in Los Angeles, as you do. And we agreed to living together within the first 15 minutes of knowing each other.
