i watched veep for the first time recently, knowing absolutely nothing about it, and i can't tell you how genuinely heartbroken I got when I found out dan and amy didn't get together (i do this thing where I like to look up spoilers, so i found out early).
it was so obvious that they were supposed to have a bickering workplace rivalry to relationship arc (like i can even mention two other sitcom couples with a woman named Amy in them that so that same thing, i can spot it from a mile away), i just wanted to find out how the hell they were going to retcon their relationship in a way that made sense for them not to get together, and lo and behold, they didn't, it just doesn't make sense.
i found out abt the Mendel stuff later and it got easier to pinpoint where things went wrong, but overall I'm mostly healing my heart with fanfics at this point
I'm sorry the show got spoiled for you, Anon! I would say that in this case though, it might've been easier to find out that way versus finding out while actually watching the show live. It was a very...difficult time to watch the show and realize WHILE it was airing that Dan and Amy were not in fact going to be ending up together and that the show itself was sadly decreasing in enjoyment.
The biggest thing I realized that once the later seasons were aired there was honestly nothing much the writers could do to salvage the mess they made of their relationship. I'll spare details cause you're still watching but the way their relationship had evolved....it would've taken a micracle for them to even get on a friendship level by the end of the show.
And it's good that you're drowning out your sadness in fics! There's a lot of great writers and stories for the Dan/Amy ship and many people turned to them (and still do) after the ending of the show!
