I was inspired by that last post I reblogged to share one of my favorite children’s books (literally ever) because it never, never… never fails to make me cry.

I absolutely adore the illustrations by David Litchfield, but it’s honestly Smriti Prasadam-Halls’s words that get me most:

“Rain before rainbows. Cloud before sun. Night before daybreak. The old day is done.

“There are mountains for climbing. Journeys to take. Dreams that are hopeful. Decisions to make.

“Dark days may shake us and worries creep in, with dragons to duel and battles to win.

“Thunder will rumble. Lightning will flash. The wind will start blowing and tall waves will crash.

“But… there are footsteps to follow and words that are wise. There’s a map that will guide us when troubles arise.

“There are friends who will help us, courageous and kind. A rope to hold on to… and treasures to find.

“Sowing and planting. Roots before shoot. Stem before flower. Leaf before fruit.

“Rain before rainbows, clouds before sun, night before daybreak—a new day’s begun.

“A day full of promise, a day full of light… The morning is breaking…

“And the morning is bright.”

I don’t really know why those last two lines get to me so much, but they do.

(Is it perhaps the kind of hope I feel from my faith? Is it how the words reflect the perfect joy of repentance and redemption, like the fresh start we all get with each new day? Maybe.)

(It could also be that the little fox companion of the girl’s sticking by her side throughout the illustrations reminds me of The Boy, the Mole, the Fox, and the Horse… idk.)

(It’s probably both, but I like to think it’s mostly my faith.)

I’ve really wanted to make an edit with Prasadam-Halls’s words coupled with some well-known media (like LotR, AtLA, or even It’s a Wonderful Life; just something that gets properly sad and then overwhelmingly happy to match the tone of the words) for years now. But who knows when I’ll find the time lol.

Edit: Just realized this book is very Beatrix Potter-esque. No wonder I love it. :)
