The last living member of the ground echelon was a man by the name of David Wolman. He was an air traffic controller on the day shift in Thorpe Abbotts control tower, meaning he was most frequently the man the air crews were in communication with.

How poetic is it that the last living member of 100th Bomb Group’s ground echelon was one of their most dedicated traffic controllers? It’s almost as though he refused to abandon his post until all of the crews took off safely up into the wild blue yonder.

'Aloha Rodeo' is coming out in May (I got an ARC from work) and I'd recommend it to anyone looking for an interesting bit of nonfiction -- it's about Hawaiian cowboys, their ranching tradition, and how they came to win the Cheyenne rodeo at the beginning of the 20th century. For a short book, there's a lot here; it covers Hawaii's history as a colonized nation, how it adapted to the introduction of cattle and the impositions of other countries, the mythologizing of the 'Wild West' and how rodeos were a display and adaptation of cowboy culture, imperialism, racism, as well as just the difficulties of managing angry cattle in tropical forests and lava fields. It also does a great job of capturing the excitement and energy of the rodeo shows, without ever seeming like it's sensationalizing the history there. Even if you're not looking for this particular bit of history, I'd recommend checking it out -- it's a quick read, and a lot of fun just to discover a new corner of things I hadn't known about.

The card's fairly straightforward here; it's Blue because they came from Islands, they've got Horsemanship (which is also amusing as it's an ability that's a historical curiosity that we don't see around any more), and they can wrangle and hogtie an enemy.

Venice was built to confuse. The floating Italian city has few straight lines: Each cobblestoned footpath veers and twists, the buildings lean, and small bridges vault sideways. For tourists, it’s like entering a labyrinth. Locals have tried to help, scrawling arrows on the walls. They are supposed to point to San Marco Square, the city’s most prominent attraction, but sometimes the arrows point in opposite directions. The beauty is that it doesn’t really matter. Somehow, everybody ends up in San Marco anyway, as if by magic.

With a cigarette in one hand and a money- marking pen in the other, Kuhl began his quest to conquer the dollar by thumbing through thick binders of paper samples. Money-marking pens draw a black line on paper made with starch but not on stock that lacks starch, such as the ultrafine cotton-linen sheets manufactured by Crane & Co. of Dalton, Massachusetts, the sole provider of US dollar substrate. He contacted a dealer in Düsseldorf, hoping to buy some of Crane’s special blend of 75 percent cotton and 25 percent linen, but he was told that selling it was forbidden. Eventually Kuhl connected with a dealer in Prague who supplied him with starch-free paper that felt and weighed about the same as the Crane’s.
