20th January 1779, death of renowned English actor, and theatre manager David Garrick. Garrick’s insistence of realistic acting, and in depth productions that utilized set design, costumes and special effects, revolutionized 18th century theatre, and the reputation of it. Garrick was also influential in the restoration of Shakespeare during the 18th century, adapting Shakespere’s original texts to the plays we recognize today. The ending of Romeo and Juliet where they turn to each other before they die was Garrick’s creation. Upon his own death Garrick became the first actor to be granted the honour of being buried in Westminster Abbey, in Poets' Corner next to the monument to William Shakespeare. His older acting style contemporary James Quin (note the name), said of Garrick’s realistic acting "If this young fellow be right, then we have been all wrong." 21st January 1766, death of English actor James Quin, friendly acting rival of David Garrick. In contrast to the realistic acting style, and quiet manner of Garrick, Quin was known for his acting excess, swordsmanship and passion; both on the stage and off it. On the 10th July 1718, he was convicted of manslaughter after killing a fellow actor in a duel. This was repeated later in the killing of another actor by his sword. In 1721, he defended the stage manager and the theatre with his sword, after a drunken nobleman started a riot.
