Study Series - Maria V Snyder
For starters this isn’t a YA series, I’m glad I didn’t know that though because I rarely read books that aren’t YA and I’m so glad I read this series, our protagonist starts off at 19 but is in her late 20s by the end of the series. Okay Ilets begin with the bad - the age gap. Yelena falls In love with a man MUCH older than her, and I get she’s an adult and able to consent and make decisions but he was also in a position of power over her and it made me pretty uncomfortable for the first few books. Of course it’s never really mentioned that he’s so much older, but you still know and it’s like okay. They threw in some diversity which was good although with one of them I’m not sure if it counts? Which was disappointing *you’ll understand if you read it but I can’t explain anymore without spoilers from later books* other than that I really really enjoyed this series. I loved that women were considered just as powerful and capable as men in the army, the Magic was cool and the world was well explained, I never felt lost or confused which is impressive world building. Hold out for book two because there’s a horse and I’m not gonna explain much but basically she’s sassy as fuck and I love her. This series really made me feel for every character, I was invested and hooked. It did read a lot like a new adult series although it could be read by someone younger. *i will put a trigger warning for sexual assault and violence, as that does play a small part in the story both early on and later, but as a survivor I didn’t find it so bad, in fact at times I found it kind of empowering that the survivors were incredibly strong and badass women who faced their assault and kept on going.* it’s a pretty long series and there’s so much I can’t say without spoilers but I absolutely loved the characters and world building and the plot was great and there aren’t too many ways I can fault it. ALSO IM PRETTY SURE THE MC IS BLACK... although it’s never directly said it’s implied she has dark skin okay so that’s awesome
Who I recommend this book to: lovers of fantasy, magic, assassins, badass heroines and talking sassy horses.
I give it 4.5/5 roses 🌹 because you should read it even though it’s not young adult
