The Gingerbread House in Yellow Springs c. 1850 The Carpenter Gothic, also known as Rural Gothic, is a North American home style that evolved from Gothic Revival architecture (1840-1880). Gothic detailing can be seen in the steeply-pitched roof line with cross gables, adorned with decorative gingerbread trim, known as vergeboard or bargeboard. An abundance of North American timber and the invention of the scroll saw led to mass-produced wood moulding that mimicked the elaborate stone-carved details seen in High Gothic style. Another characteristic Gothic feature is the pointed arch, or lancet, windows. In contrast to the highly-ornamented Gothic style, the Carpenter Gothic was of light-frame construction with clean board and batten siding, making them ideal for private residences and small churches.
